ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis track and field opened its outdoor season this weekend, spread across three different meets.
On Friday, the distance runners competed at both the Raleigh Relays at NC State and the Distance Carnival at Washington University in St. Louis. The rest of the team took part in the Ole Miss Relays at the University of Mississippi.
Saint Louis surpassed three school records at the Ole Miss Relays. On the women's side, Avery Pacella turned in a 200-meter time of 24.83 for a new school record. For the men, senior Brett Kowalczyk established the new school record in the shot put with a throw of 49-8.25. Freshman Myles Gascon ran a school-record time of 10.81 in the 100 meters.
The Billiken women had three additional top-two performances at the Ole Miss Relays. Pacella was the runner-up in the 400 meters, finishing in 55.82. Ann Harlos was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles in a tight race, finishing behind the winner by one-thousandth of a second. Katie Wissing finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 39-5.25.
At NC State, Manuel de Backer debuted in the 10,000 meters and neared his PR. He finished in a time of 29:34.84, the second-fastest time in the A-10 so far this season. At Wash. U., Ben Naeger ran the 10,000 meters in a time in 30:18.33, the third-best mark in the league this season.
Up next, Saint Louis hosts its lone home meet of the season, the Billiken Invitational, on April 5-6 at the SLU Medical Center Stadium on the University campus. The meet schedule can be found here.
