ST. LOUIS – Senior second baseman Mackenzie Lawson and freshman left fielder Gabbie Kowalik of the Saint Louis softball team have been selected the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for April 15-21, the league office announced today.

Lawson and Kowalik – who earned her second A-10 Rookie of the Week nod – helped power the Billikens to a 3-1 week, including a three-game sweep of A-10 opponent Rhode Island.

Lawson hit safely in all four games, had team highs of nine RBIs and a .545 on-base percentage, and tied the team high with a .500 batting average (5-for-10). She handled 15 fielding chances without an error.

In the Rhode Island series opener, Lawson completed SLU's comeback from a 7-1 deficit with a walk-off three-run home run. She hit a grand slam in game two and helped SLU sweep the series with two hits and two RBIs in an 8-6 win in the finale. In a midweek nonconference game against Southeast Missouri State, Lawson singled with one out in the sixth inning to break up a perfect game.

The two home runs gave Lawson five round-trippers on the season, tying the team lead. Her 20 RBIs rank third on the team. Lawson is batting .341 in conference games only.

Kowalik also hit safely in all four games, including two-hit efforts in each game of the Rhode Island series (6-for-11), and she had at least one RBI in every contest. She registered team highs of seven hits and 15 total bases for the week, and she tied the team lead in batting average (.500) and runs (five).

In the comeback win over Rhode Island in the series opener, Kowalik ignited SLU's decisive five-run seventh inning with a one-out triple. Her two-run home run in the sixth inning of the series finale was the difference in the Billikens’ 8-6 victory.

Kowalik has a team-high-tying five homers, ranks second in RBIs (27) and runs (25), and is third in batting average (.331), doubles (seven), on-base percentage (.389) and slugging percentage (.515). In A-10 games, she carries a .408 batting mark and is tied for the team lead with 17 RBIs.

The Billikens play a three-game A-10 series at Saint Joseph’s Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28.
