Kaylea Chappelle fired a 1-hitter and Kaylyn Breitbach delivered two sacrifice flies to lead Saint Louis to a 2-0 victory over Dayton in an Atlantic 10 Conference Championship elimination game Wednesday afternoon at Sortino Field.

The Billikens, who were edged 4-3 by George Washington in their tournament opener, play next at 3 p.m. Thursday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

Chappelle carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and retired the first two batters on one pitch apiece. Ellie Ziegler lined a clean double to right field to bring the tying run to the plate, but Chappelle fanned Alyssa Cacini to end the game.

SLU scored its first run in the fifth. Sadie Wise and Gabbie Kowalik singled and advanced on Maria Connell’s sacrifice bunt. Breitbach lifted a fly ball to left center that brought home Wise for a 1-0 Billiken lead.

In the seventh, Kowalik was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to third when the first baseman made an errant throw on Connell’s sacrifice. Breitbach followed with her second sac fly, this time to right field.

Chappelle, who did not walk a batter, registered her fifth win of the season. Kowalik and Connell had two hits apiece.

In the opener, Saint Louis answered George Washington’s first-inning tally with a run in the second. Mackenzie Lawson drew a one-out walk, moved to second on Kat Lane’s two-out single and scored on Wise’s single.

GW grabbed a 4-1 advantage in its half of the second, but that concluded the Colonials’ scoring against Billiken hurler Kallen Loveless.

SLU drew to within a run in the fourth. With two away, Lane singled and Wise delivered her seventh home run of the season.

Lane collected three hits, while Breitbach doubled twice.
