NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Louis is a near-unanimous choice to capture the 2019 Atlantic 10 Conference women’s soccer championship in a poll of the league’s head coaches, the conference office announced today.
In addition, four Billikens – one at each position – were selected to the 12-player preseason All-Conference team. They are senior defender Alli Klug, senior goalkeeper Mary Niehaus, senior midfielder Courtney Reimer and sophomore forward Hannah Friedrich.
The Billikens received 13 of 14 first-place votes and tallied 192 points. VCU, which finished second to Saint Louis in the regular-season standings and the A-10 Championship a year ago, was second with 176 points. Third-place George Mason (163 points) garnered one first-place vote and was followed closely by fourth-place Saint Joseph’s (161).
Massachusetts (135) was fifth, followed by Dayton (116), Fordham (104), La Salle (98), George Washington (97), Duquesne (83), Richmond (51), Davidson (40), St. Bonaventure (28) and Rhode Island (26).
Saint Louis kicks off the 2019 campaign Thursday, Aug. 22, at Notre Dame. The home opener is slated for Sunday, Aug. 25, against Indiana State at 1 p.m.
