EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Saint Louis swimming and diving enjoyed a successful start to the 2019-20 season Sept. 14, capturing the women’s and combined titles at the second annual St. Louis Showcase.


The Billiken women scored 671.5 points, topping second-place Lindenwood by 246 points in the five-team field. The Saint Louis squads combined for 986 points, 79 better than runner-up Lindenwood. SLU placed third in the men’s meet with 314.5 points.


Emily Smith and Claire Koh led the women’s team with two top-five finishes apiece. Smith won the 50 backstroke (meet-record 31.33) and placed second in the 200 IM (2:32.81), while Koh claimed third in the 400 freestyle (4:45.51) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:36.30).


Alexis Beine and Lauren Payton finished second in the 50 breaststroke (36.03) and 400 freestyle (4:43.48), respectively.


Also posting top-five finishes were Rylee Stone in the 50 butterfly (third, 30.47); Tessa Horan in the 200 IM (fourth, 2:35.00); Katie Knapp in the 50 butterfly (fourth, 30.59); Olivia Tate in the 50 backstroke (fourth, 32.88); Mary First in the 50 freestyle (fourth, 28.89); Natalie Daniel in the 50 butterfly (fifth, 30.74); Delaney Isakson in the 400 freestyle (fifth, 4:51.92); and Emily Kishish in the 50 breaststroke (fifth, 37.40). 


The Billiken men were led by Janssen Gamilla, runner-up in the 50 backstroke (28.05), and Grant Streid, fourth in the 200 IM (2:17.57).


In women’s combined events, Tate, Knapp and Stone placed second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the quadathlon (combined times in the 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle). Koh was second in the triathlon (200 IM, 400 freestyle, 50 freestyle). Gamilla finished fifth in the men’s quadathlon.


Saint Louis hosts its intrasquad/alumni meet Saturday, Sept. 21, at Simon Recreation Center. The event begins at 10 a.m.
