ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis freshman Margo Richardson (Mt. Vernon, Ill./Mt. Vernon Township) will run the 1,500 meters this weekend at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Richardson, who is seeded sixth in the event with a qualifying time of 4:30.57, will run in the semifinals Friday at 12:30 p.m. (CT). If she finishes in the top eight, she would advance to the 1,500 meters final Saturday at 1:05 p.m. (CT).
The USA Junior Championships serves as the selection meet for the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, July 22-24, in Miramar, Fla. The top two finishers in each event in Eugene will be invited to compete as members of Team USA.
Richardson notched her top time in the 1,500 meters at the Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, crossing the line in a time of 4:30.57. Her previous top time of 4:36.78 came at the Ole Miss Invitational, where she finished second and drew A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for her effort.
Richardson has enjoyed a strong freshman campaign. During the cross country season, she was tabbed A-10 Freshman of the Year after drawing All-Conference honors by placing ninth at the A-10 Championship. During the indoor track and field season, she ran the Billikens' fastest mile time of 5:02.35.
Saint Louis has been well represented at the USA Junior Championships in recent years. Senior Brian Holdmeyer became the first Billiken ever to qualify for the event, competing in the 10K in 2008. The Billikens sent multiple student-athletes to the meet for the first time in 2009 as Brittney Cloudy competed in the triple jump and Dahmar Smiles ran the 110- and 400-meter hurdles.
Also competing at the USA Junior Championships is incoming Billiken freshman Sean Canavin (Lewisville, Texas/Marcus), who will run unattached in the men's 800 meters Friday at 4:55 p.m. (CT).
