THE BASICS

• Saint Louis won the 10th annual Marcia E. Hamilton Classic by going 3-0 in their matches over the weekend. That record marks the first time since 2008 that the Billikens have began their season 3-0.

• Maya Taylor was named the Tournament MVP, recording 54 kills and 34 digs in the three matches.

• Kennedy Cordia was named to the All-Tournament Team, collecting 139 assists (11.58 per set) and seven service aces.

Southern Illinois Match

FIRST SET

Saint Louis grabbed six of the first seven points and never looked back. They took the opening set from the Salukis 25-16.

SECOND SET

Southern Illinois controlled the match from the start, taking seven of the first eight points. The Billikens crawled back, eventually bringing the frame to within one at 17-16, but the Salukis escaped with a 25-21 set win.

THIRD SET

The most thrilling set in the match saw 26 tie scores and 14 lead changes. SLU was up against set point six times, but they found a way to tie it each time. Sien Gallop (seven) and Taylor (five) combined for 12 kills in the frame, and the Billikens took it 36-34.

36 marked the highest number of points a Billikens volleyball team has scored in a set in the 25-point era. The previous high was a 35-33 victory over Rhode Island on November 8, 2013.

FOURTH SET

The Billikens finished off the Salukis in set four by the score of 25-18, and for the first time since 2011, the Bills were 2-0 to start their season.

NOTABLE

• Gallop and Taylor had a match-high 17 kills each. 

• Cordia recorded 46 assists and had four service aces.

• Cayce Chaykowsky had a match-high 20 digs, while Cordia collected 17.

• Sara Daniels assisted on eight blocks in the match.

Portland State Match

FIRST SET

The Billikens jumped out to a 6-0 lead and ran away with the frame from there. They took the opening set 25-15. Taylor (6), Gallop (4) and Juliana Phillips (4) combined for 14 kills.

SECOND SET

The second set saw 11 tie scores and five lead changes, but the Bills were able to rally from a 14-17 deficit to take the frame 25-21.

THIRD SET

Portland State came out on top in a back-and-forth set that featured eight tie scores and three lead changes. The Vikings led 19-24, and while the Billikens attempted a rally, PSU was able to hold on 25-22.

FOURTH SET

Saint Louis was down 2-3 early, but they tied it at three and then kept the lead from there. They won the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

NOTABLE

• Taylor had a match-high 17 kills, becoming the leader or co-leader in that category for each match.

• Phillips collected 13 kills.

• Five Billikens had double-digit digs.

• Cordia recorded 49 assists in the match.
