ST. LOUIS - The Billikens (20-7, 4-1 A-10) defeated the Flyers 7-3 today to halt their two-game losing skid and notch their 20th win of the season. Sophomore Clay Smith picks up the win after going 7.1 innings with seven hits and three earned runs. He struck out six while walking two. Smith is 3-1 on the year.
Through three innings, the Flyers held a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, junior Alex Kelly scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Mike Vigliarolo to tie the ballgame. However, Dayton regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame. The Billikens remained resilient and tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single from Senior Marco DiRoma.
Saint Louis took the lead for the first time in the seventh inning. Sophomore Danny Brennan and senior Connor Gandossy opened the inning with walks and were advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Alec Sole. Junior Mike Levine drove Brennan in with a sacrifice to deep center field. DiRoma scored Gandossy with a single to right center.
The Billikens tacked on another three runs in the eighth. Brennan reached base on a fielding error to launch a two-out rally. He then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Gandossy walked to put runners at the corners for Sole. He drove Brennan in on a single to center. Levine was hit by a pitch to load the bases for DiRoma. DiRoma reached base on a throwing error, scoring two more and bringing the score to 7-2 in favor of the Billikens.
The Flyers scored once in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 7-3, but were unable to overcome the defecit.
Saint Louis will take on Dayton tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. for the third game of the series. The Billikens will start sophomore Damian Rivera.
