ST. LOUIS - One day after losing to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois, the Saint Louis Billikens bounced back with a 14-8 win over WIU. Freshman RHP Joe Powell picks up the first win of his career after going 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and only four base runners. The Bills are now 11-7 overall.
The second meeting between the two teams began in much the same way as the first contest did. Western Illinois scored two runs in the first and five in the second. The Billikens did score some in the early going. Freshman Braxton Martinez hit a two-run homer to left center in a four-run first inning. However, entering the bottom of the third, WIU led 7-4.
In the third, the Bills erupted for seven runs on six hits. It is the fourth time this season that Saint Louis has scored five or more runs in an inning this season. Through three innings of play, SLU carried an 11-7 lead.
The rest of the game was mild, in comparison to the torrid start. The Leathernecks scored one in the fourth, but the Billikens answered back with a Jake Henson sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Bills tacked on two more in the seventh to end the scoring and walk away with a 14-8 win.
The heart of the Billiken lineup hit the ball very well today. The 3-4-5 hitters (Mike Vigliarolo, Grant Nelson and Martinez) combined to go 10-for-14 with a home run, three doubles, six runs and 10 RBIs. Vigliarolo alone went four-for-five with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs.
Next up for Saint Louis is a weekend series against South Dakota State at the Billiken Sports Center. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
