ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis junior RHP Clay Smith stymied the Xavier offense to propel the Billikens to an 11-1 win at the Billiken Sports Complex. Smith (4-2) threw a complete game, allowing four hits, one walk and one earned run. The Bills are now 18-10 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
Saint Louis as a team had a terrific day at the plate. Senior Alex Kelly was three-for-three with two doubles, Mike Vigliarolo was two-for-five with his second home run of the season and freshman Braxton Martinez was three-for-five adding two doubles of his own. Overall, the Billiken offense was 15-37 (.405 batting average) with six doubles and a home run.
Defensively, the Billikens flashed some of the best leather in the league. The double play duo of Alec Solé and Mike Levine made every play hit their way. The pair combined for 16 assists and two double plays. Solé alone had 10 assists, tied for the most in a single game at the Billiken Sports Center. Smith kept the ball on the ground, inducing 18 ground outs to only four fly outs.
With the win, the Billikens take the series from Xavier, two games to one. Next up for the Bills will be a trip to SIUE on April 2. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
