ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis baseball team defeated the SIUE Cougars 7-5 Tuesday night at the Billiken Sports Center. Freshman RHP Joe Powell (3-0) gets the win, his second against SIUE this season. With the win, the Bills rise to 23-10 in their 2013 campaign. The contest was the 208th game played by senior 2B Mike Levine at Saint Louis, a school record for games played.

Saint Louis had a tough start with SIUE scoring in the top of the first inning. However, the Billikens quickly overcame the quick start, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The Cougars responded to the Billiken run in the top of the second, scoring a run to trim the SLU lead to 4-2. Saint Louis then scored a run in each of the next three innings to bring the lead to 7-2, SLU through five innings.

In the sixth, SIUE woke up their offense. The Cougars scored two runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.  They drew within two runs in the eighth on an RBI single to right.

In the top of the ninth, senior LHP Jon Levin entered the game. He made quick work of the Cougar hitters, setting them down in order for his second save of the season. The save was the fifth of his career, tying him for fourth all-time at Saint Louis.

The Billiken lineup was led by senior outfielder Alex Kelly. He was three-for-five with two RBIs, a run scored and two stolen bases. In all, the Billikens had six stolen bases in the contest: Kelly and Michael Bozarth had two apiece and Grant Nelson and Jordan Hammerman each had one.

Saint Louis will continue its homestand at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12 when it takes on Milwaukee at the Billiken Sports Center.
