ST. LOUIS - Senior RHP Alex Alemann threw a gem at Billiken Sports Center, leading the Bills over St. Bonaventure, 3-1. Alemann (6-2) threw 8.0 innings with five hits, no walks and tied his career high with 10 strikeouts. Fellow senior Marco Mejia gets the save, his fifth of the year. Saint Louis is now 27-11 overall and 9-1 in A-10 play.
The Billikens plated their first run of the day in the third on a sacrifice fly from Grant Nelson. Alex Kelly hit his seventh homerun of the year in the fifth to give SLU a 2-0 lead through five.
St. Bonaventure scored its only run of the contest in the sixth on an RBI single.
Alec Solé ripped an RBI double to center field in the seventh to score the Billikens' third run.
In the ninth, Mejia entered the game with runners at first and second with no one out. The Bonnies hit a single up the middle, but held the runner at third to load the bases with no outs. For the second time in as many games, Mejia faced the bases loaded in a tight ballgame. He made the best of the situation, striking out the next batter he faced with three pitches for the first out, then wrapping up the save on the next play with a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play.
The Bonnies and Bills will meet again tomorrow, April 20 at the Billiken Sports Center. Original game time was slated for 1:00 p.m., but the game has been pushed back to 2:00 p.m. CT.
