ST. LOUIS - Junior RHP Clay Smith led the Billikens to a 4-0 shutout win over Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon. The win moves SLU to 29-11 overall and 11-1 in conference action. Smith rises to 5-2 on the year after hurling 7.1 shutout innings with eight strikeouts, one walk and five hits.
Saint Louis opened the game strong with RBI singles from Grant Nelson and Mike Vigliarolo in the bottom of the first. It was the 15th time this season SLU has scored in the first inning. The Billikens are 13-2 in those games.
Vigliarolo added an RBI double in the fifth to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of SLU. The fifth inning has been kind to the Billikens this season, as they are outscoring opponents 45-19 in the frame this season.
Alec Solé scored the final run in the sixth on an error by St. Bonaventure.
This game was only the second shutout for Saint Louis this season.
The Saint Louis pitching staff was phenomenal in the St. Bonaventure series. The Billikens combined for 24 strikeouts and only five walks with a 1.67 ERA in the three games. The Bonnies were held to a .220 average against the Billiken arms.
Saint Louis will attempt to keep the momentum rolling against in-state rival Missouri State on April 23 at the Billiken Sports Center. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
