Smith Shuts Out Richmond in 2-0 Win
RICHMOND, VA. – Junior RHP Clay Smith threw a complete-game two-hit shutout of the Richmond Spiders to seal a 2-0 win for Saint Louis. The Billikens are now 30-13 overall and 12-3 in conference play. The win is Smith’s sixth of the season and he is now 6-2. This was the first SLU win over Richmond since May 13, 2011.
Smith was spectacular in today’s contest. He went the distance, allowing only two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. Despite the shaky defense behind him (four Saint Louis errors on the day), Smith only allowed six base runners on the day.
The Billikens opened the scoring in the second on a homerun to deep center from Mike Vigliarolo . Vigliarolo has had a tremendous series. The HR was his third of the series and doubled his season total to six. In the three games against the Spiders, Vigliarolo was eight-for-12 with three home runs, three doubles, four RBI and four runs scored. He had a 1.667 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage.
Saint Louis added its second run in the fifth on an RBI single from Michael Bozarth .
Richmond broke up Smith’s no-hitter in the eighth on a one-out ground ball through the right side. The Spiders added another hit in the ninth, but that was the only other Richmond hit.
With the win, Saint Louis now has 30 wins on the season. There have only been six 30-win seasons in Saint Louis history. Four of them have come under head coach Darin Hendrickson .
The Bills return to action on Wednesday, May 1 when they head to Oxford, Miss., to take on Ole Miss. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
