SAUGET, ILL. – The Billikens (34-17) kept momentum going with an 11-0 win over the Salukis of Southern Illinois (24-28). Freshman Josh Moore (1-2) gets the win after hurling six scoreless innings with three hits, one walk and a career-best five strikeouts. The victory is the third in a row for Saint Louis and the third consecutive double-digit run total.
In the second, SLU plated three on a mammoth three-run homerun to left field from senior Alex Kelly. The round-tripper was the ninth of the season for Kelly, best in the Atlantic 10.
The Billikens displayed even more power in the third. Danny Brennan hit his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to right to give the Bills a 6-0 lead. In the next at bat, Jake Henson put one over the wall in left for back-to-back long balls for SLU. Later in the frame, Kelly hit a grounder to short that was just enough to score Alec Solé from third. Through the first three, Saint Louis led 8-0.
Both teams were held scoreless until the seventh, when Solé drove in Brennan on an RBI single to short. It was 9-0 Billikens through seven.
The Bills added two more in the eighth, on another homerun, this one from Martinez. It was the Billikens’ fourth shot of the game, the most for a single game this season.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for Saint Louis and the third time the Salukis have been held scoreless this season.
Next up for SLU is the regular season finale against Charlotte. The Billikens will host the 49ers at the BSC for a three-game series starting Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. The Niners are currently first in the A-10 with a 16-5 conference mark. The Bills sit a game back at 15-7, tied with La Salle in second. If Saint Louis can claim a share of the regular-season title, it would be the first back-to-back regular-season crowns since the 1966 and 1967 seasons.
