Big Second Half Lifts Billikens Past SEMO, 87-64
ST. LOUIS – Grandy Glaze registered a perfect shooting performance and his first career double-double to lead Saint Louis to a season-opening 87-64 victory over Southeast Missouri State Friday night at Chaifetz Arena.
Glaze scored a career-high and team-high-tying 16 points, going 7-of-7 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. He grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, one shy of his career best.
Dwayne Evans was 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from the stripe to equal Glaze’s 16 points. Jordair Jett (7-of-11 FG) netted 15 points and added four assists, while Rob Loe tallied 13 points and four assists.
Three Billikens collected eight points apiece – Mike McCall Jr., Austin McBroom and Mike Crawford. McCall Jr. recorded a game-high five assists.
Southeast Missouri’s Jarekious Bradley finished with game highs of 22 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Antonius Cleveland had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Darrian Gray scored 12 points.
SLU shot 51.6 percent from the field while holding SEMO to 37.5 percent. The Billikens outscored the Redhawks 56-22 in the paint.
The Bills gradually built a 10-point cushion, 29-19, with 7:49 to play in the first half, but the Redhawks finished the period with a 16-5 run that put them on top 35-34 at intermission.
Five different players scored during the spurt, with Cleveland tallying six points including a 3-pointer that cut the SLU lead to one. A bucket by Bradley with 30 seconds left gave him 15 points for the half and SEMO the lead.
Gray’s three-point play on SEMO’s initial second-half possession put the Redhawks in front by four, and the visitors led 41-38 when Saint Louis began to take command.
The Billikens went on a 21-2 run that gave them firm control of the game with a 59-43 lead at the 9:55 mark. Loe began and ended the run with a three-point play and 3-point field goal, respectively, while Evans scored seven points during the outburst.
SEMO would draw no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.The Billikens return to action Wednesday, Nov. 13, at SIUE. Tip time is 7 p.m.
