Jett Takes Over, Powers Billikens to Win at La Salle
PHILADELPHIA – Saint Louis senior guard Jordair Jett scored 19 second-half points, including a go-ahead driving layup with less than four seconds remaining, to propel the Billikens to a thrilling 65-63 victory at La Salle Saturday.
The win, SLU’s 16th in a row, moves the Billikens to 22-2 overall and 9-0 in the Atlantic 10.
Jett scored 19 of the Billikens’ last 24 points en route to 25 for the game. He was 9-of-14 from the field, 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, distributed three assists and recorded two steals.
The Billikens led 61-54 with five minutes remaining, but La Salle came back to tie it up with a little more than a minute left on a Tyreek Duren 3-pointer. Jett buried his first of two go-ahead buckets with under a minute left with 55 seconds remaining. La Salle’s Duren tied it up again at 63-all with 33 seconds left, setting up the last shot for Saint Louis.
Jett, who brought the ball up the floor, slowly crept toward the top of the key and drove to his left for the game-winning layin. La Salle quickly in-bounded the ball and got it to half court, but the last-second heave was off the mark and the Billikens escaped Tom Gola Arena with the victory.
Senior forward Dwayne Evans registered 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while senior guard Mike McCall Jr. chipped in eight. Senior forward Rob Loe pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Senior guard Austin McBroom hit a key 3-pointer with 11:51 to go in the second half, and the Billikens never lost the lead from that point on.
The Billikens opened the game with a 17-8 advantage a little more than five minutes in. After La Salle pulled within one with a 10-2 run, the Billikens scored eight straight thanks to two buckets each by Evans and Tanner Lancona.
La Salle scored at the horn as the teams went into halftime tied 33-33.
La Salle led by as much as three in the second half, but was never able to build on its advantage as SLU always had an answer.
The Billikens host VCU next Saturday for the Billiken Blizzard at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
