On Your Mark: Saint Louis cross country travels to Springfield, Mo., to participate in The Richard Clark Invitational presented by The Greater Springfield Sports Commission. The collegiate races begin at 9 a.m. at the MSU Cross Country facility.
About the Billikens: The 2010 edition of the cross country squad features six newcomers (three men, three women). Junior Hilary Orf and freshman Margo Richardson represent a formidable duo on the women's side, while senior Brian Holdmeyer and sophomore Jack Hostettler has finished one-two on the men's side.
Last Time Out: Junior Hilary Orf set the Billikens' 5K school record en route to a fourth-place finish at the National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame. Orf crossed the finish line in 17:52 to break the previous record of 18:01. Freshman Margo Richardson finished fifth (17:55) and sophomore Elise Medley placed 17th (18:28) as the Billikens finished fifth out of 35 schools. The men's team finished 12th overall and were led by senior Brian Holdmeyer's season-best time of 25:39, which was 19th overall.
Record Breakers: The Billikens' 5K women's school record has been broken twice this season. Freshman Margo Richardson broke the record in her first event at the Duquesne Duals, only to see junior Hilary Orf surpass it the next event at the National Catholic Invitational.
Dandy Debut: Freshman Aimee Walther won the Saluki Invitational in 2000. Her time eclipsed the previous mark of 18:07.05 set by Laura Coyer in 2007. The record has since been broken by Hilary Orf.
Rookie of the Week: Freshman Margo Richardson has captured two A-10 Rookie of the Week nods both times she has been eligible. She earned the honor after her first-place showing at the Duquesne Duals and following a fifth-place performance at the National Catholic Invitational.
Senior Leadership: Both the men's and women's squads have a solid corps of senior leaders who will guide an otherwise young contingent of Billiken runners. Maddie O'Quinn return for the women.
Fresh Faces: New additions on the women's side are Brian Anderson, James Collins and Carl Holborn.
Recapping Last Season: Both the men's and women's teams finished 11th at last season's Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, which was run in St. Louis at Forest Park. Hilary Orf became the first Billiken to claim All-Conference honors by placing 13th in the event.
A Glance at the Schedule: The Billikens finish the regular season Oct. 15 at Bradley. The A-10 Championship is set for Oct. 30 at Duquesne, and the NCAA Regional takes place Nov. 13 at Bradley. Once again, the NCAA Championship (Nov. 22) will take place in Terre Haute, Ind.
