Billiken Softball Makes Strong Community Service Effort

ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis University softball team reached out to the St. Louis community in several ways during the fall semester, contributing almost 350 volunteer hours to a variety of organizations.

The Billikens gave a helping hand to 23 organizations or events this fall, including the Missouri Botanical Garden, Girls on the Run, Special Needs Soccer Association, the Arthritis Foundation 5K, Campus Kitchen, Operation Food Search, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Wings of Hope.

Kallen Loveless set a team record by contributing 33 hours of service. Also among the team leaders were Krystina Kernich and Megan LoBianco, 30 hours apiece; Maddie Baalman, Kaylyn Breitbach, Emma Buckles and Josie Knesel, 26 hours apiece; and Alex Nickel, 22 hours.

On SLU’s “Make A Difference Day,” the team joined more than 4,000 fellow students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and community members for the annual campus-wide event, which is the largest day of service in Missouri and one of the largest in the nation.

“This fall, we engaged in numerous opportunities serving various organizations throughout the St. Louis metro area,” head coach Christy Connoyer said. “We organized some of these events as a team, but a majority of the hours our softball student-athletes served came from their own ideas. They found organizations of interest and worked with teammates to broaden their scope of service. They were motivated to help make a difference in the community, and they were genuine servant leaders and advocates of doing the right thing.”
