Saint Louis Baseball to Host Dinner with Ozzie Smith
ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis baseball will host an intimate dinner with Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith on Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at Dominic’s in Clayton. Cost for the event, which is limited to 30 attendees, is $1,000 per person. Smith played 19 seasons in the major leagues, including 15 years with the St. Louis Cardinals (1982-96). Known for his defensive prowess, “The Wizard” is a 15-time All-Star, 1982 World Series Champion, 1985 NLCS MVP and winner of 13 consecutive Gold Gloves (1980-92), most ever by a shortstop. Smith had 8,375 assists, 1,590 double plays and 2,511 games played at shortstop (most in National League history). Upon his retirement in 1996, St. Louis retired his number 1. In 2002, he was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame, appearing on 91.74 percent of ballots in his first year eligible.
Saint Louis brings in 16 newcomers for the 2017 season. The Billiken schedule features several prominent teams including Michigan, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. Saint Louis opens the 2017 season against Lafayette on Feb. 17 in San Antonio, Texas. The first SLU home game is on March 3 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
