A-10 Championship Central

The Saint Louis University volleyball team is the No. 3 seed for the 2017 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and will play No. 6 George Washington in a quarterfinal match Friday, Nov. 17, at 4:30 p.m. (CT). Duquesne University’s A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh is the tournament venue.

 

The Billikens (13-14, 10-4 A-10) take a four-match winning streak into the A-10 Championship. They will face George Washington (10-20, 6-8) for a third time this year after defeating the Colonials twice during the regular season – 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 in St. Louis Oct. 20, and 26-24, 27-25, 25-15 in Washington, D.C., Nov. 11.

 

VCU (28-2, 14-0), which is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, is the top seed. The Rams have won 25 consecutive matches.

 

Dayton (22-7, 13-1), which edged Saint Louis 3-2 in the 2016 A-10 Championship final, is the No. 2 seed. The Flyers’ only conference loss this season was a 3-2 setback at VCU.

 

No. 4 seed Duquesne (13-15, 8-6) and No. 5 seed Rhode Island (11-15, 6-8) play Friday’s first quarterfinal at  2 p.m., followed by the SLU-GW match. In Saturday’s semifinals, VCU takes on the Duquesne-Rhode Island winner at 1 p.m., and Dayton meets the SLU-GW winner at 3:30 p.m.

 

Sunday’s championship match, the winner of which receives the A-10’s automatic NCAA Championship bid, is scheduled for noon (all times Central).

 

In addition to its season sweep of George Washington, Saint Louis fell at VCU (19-25, 22-25, 20-25); lost twice to Dayton (24-26, 18-25, 15-25 at home; 31-29, 15-25, 17-25, 19-25 at UD); defeated Duquesne in St. Louis (23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 17-15); and swept Rhode Island (23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 at URI; 28-26, 15-25, 25-13, 25-21 in St. Louis).
