LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Saint Louis softball concluded play at the University of
Louisville's Red and Black Classic Sunday, falling 8-3 to Illinois State and
9-0 in five innings to No. 16 Louisville.
Kelsey Biggs registered a pair of RBI
doubles for the Billikens against Illinois State (13-10), while Alyson Brand and Katie Kroeger collected two hits apiece.
SLU
took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Brand and Biggs rapped
consecutive doubles to start the inning. Illinois State answered with two runs
in the top of the third and made it 7-1 with a five-run sixth inning. The
Redbirds added an insurance run in the seventh.
The
Billikens plated single runs in the sixth and seventh. Brand singled with two
outs in the sixth, stole second and scored on Biggs' double. A walk to pinch
hitter Kelly Flanagan and Kerri Dockins' single loaded the bases,
but the rally inflicted no further damage.
Erin Harcar's solo home run in the seventh,
her second of the year, accounted for SLU's final run.
Starter
Hannah Huebbe (6-4) absorbed the
loss. Kelcie Matesa pitched the
final 4 2/3 innings and struck out seven.
In
the nightcap, Louisville (18-0) struck for four runs in the first and pushed
across five more in the fourth against Julian
Austin (2-4). Flanagan had the only two hits for the Billikens (11-13).
Saint
Louis takes on Indiana State in a doubleheader Tuesday, March 13, in Terre
Haute, Ind. The twinbill starts at 2 p.m. (CT).
