Three Added to Sports Medicine Department

ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis University department of athletics today named Jonathan Burch assistant director of athletics/director of sports medicine. In addition, Theresa Hummel and Amy Schork join the sports medicine department as staff athletic trainers.

Burch, a 1992 graduate of Southern Mississippi, assumes his duties on Aug. 20. He will supervise a staff of three full-time certified athletic trainers whose responsibilities include injury prevention, rehabilitation and evaluation of Billiken student-athletes from SLU's 18 sports programs. In addition to overseeing the daily operation of the sports medicine staff, he will serve as head trainer for SLU's men's basketball program.

Burch has spent the previous four years as the supervisor of sports medicine for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. In that capacity, he supervised six full-time certified athletic trainers as well as six part-time physical therapists. While overseeing and directing all aspects of the sports medicine program, he was also responsible for arranging consultations for Ole Miss student-athletes. In addition, he played in integral role in the University Medical Center's initiative to become team physicians of the Mississippi Braves, an AA affiliate for the Atlanta Braves.

Prior to his stint at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, he served as head athletic trainer at University of Arkansas at Little Rock for seven years. While with the Trojans, he served as the trainer for the men's basketball program. He has also served as head athletic trainer/outreach coordinator for the Arkansas Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center and was a head athletic trainer for the NFL Europe's London Monarchs in 1996.

Hummel comes to SLU from STI Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Chandler, Ariz., where she served as a certified athletic trainer since 2004. In that role, Hummel provided advanced clinical support and collaborated with physical therapists on specific skilled interventions. From 2003 to 2004, Hummel served as a graduate athletic trainer at Grand Canyon University. At the NCAA Division II institution, she worked closely with men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball and women's tennis.

Hummel graduated from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., in 2002. There, she played four years of basketball for the Wildcats in addition to serving as a student athletic trainer. In 2004, she attained a master's in sports health care from the Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa, Ariz. At SLU, she will oversee the sports medicine operations of volleyball, women's basketball and the spirit groups.

Schork has spent the last three years working as a clinical specialist athletic trainer at Kettering Sports Medicine Center in Kettering, Ohio. In that capacity, she served as the head athletic trainer for Huber Heights Wayne High School, coordinated all educational programs for athletic trainers and coaches, and worked as a physician extender. Prior to joining Kettering Sports Medicine, Schork served as the head athletic trainer at Ohio Dominican University, an NAIA institution in Columbus, Ohio. Along with various administrative duties, she was responsible for providing coverage for the Panthers' 12 sport programs.

In addition to her collegiate experience at Ohio Domincan, Schork has spent time on sports medicine staffs at Kenyon College, Monmouth University and Western Michigan University. She earned a bachelor's degree from Coe College (Iowa) in 1995 and a master's degree from Western Michigan University in 1997. At SLU, she will primarily be responsible for the sports medicine operations of men's soccer, swimming and diving, and baseball.
