Billikens Stay Hot, Take Two at Saint Joseph's

GAME RESULTS
Game 1 – Saint Louis 6, Saint Joseph's 2
Game 2 – Saint Louis 7, Saint Joseph's 6
Saturday, April 22, 2023
Merion Station, Pa.

THE BASICS
Saint Louis scored three runs in the seventh inning of game two and held on for a 7-6 victory over Saint Joseph's and a sweep of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

SLU evened its overall record at 22-22, improved to 14-4 in the A-10 and extended its winning streak to seven games. Coupled with a doubleheader split between first-place Dayton and second-place George Mason, the sweep enabled the Billikens to move from third to second place in the A-10 standings.

Chloe Wendling was the winning pitcher in both games, giving her a career-high and league-leading 17 victories.

GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Abby Mallo's league-leading 11th home run of the season, a three-run shot, put Saint Louis on top 3-0 in the third inning.
•SLU doubled the lead in the fifth on Jane Kaniecki's sacrifice fly and Kelsey Etling's two-run double.
•Saint Joseph's scored single runs in the sixth and seventh.

GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Wendling struck out seven, did not allow an earned run and surrendered just four hits and two walks.
•Etling added a single for a two-hit game.
•Natalie Sullivan doubled and singled.
•Gabbie Kowalik had two singles.
•Kaniecki collected a double.

GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•The Billikens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Kowalik's RBI single and Kaniecki's sacrifice fly.
•The Hawks pulled even with single tallies in the first and third frames.
•SLU regained the upper hand in the fourth on Chloe Rhine's two-run homer, her fifth long ball of the season.
•Saint Joseph's claimed its first lead of the day by plating three runs in its half of the fourth.
•The score remained 5-4 in favor of the Hawks until the top of the seventh. Ashley Marietta put the Billikens in front with a two-run double, and a third run scored on an error.
•The Hawks scored once in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run aboard with nobody out. But Wendling, who came on in relief in the sixth, shut the door on the rally.

GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Sullivan had two singles.
•Kaniecki and Etling recorded a single apiece.
