Billikens Breeze Past Eastern Illinois

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis swimmers and divers won all but four events and easily defeated Eastern Illinois in men's and women's dual-meet action Thursday at the Simon Recreation Center. The Billiken men downed EIU 148-80, while the Billiken women powered their way to a 171-68 triumph.

Anna Larson (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell), Sarah Bennet (Des Peres, Mo./Westminster Christian) and Elena Ramirez (Champaign, Ill./St. Thomas More) led the SLU women by winning two events apiece. Larson captured both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, posting scores of 231.45 and 243.35, respectively. Bennet outpaced the field in the 100 butterfly (1:42.99) and the 200 individual medley (2:12.33), while Ramirez won the 50 freestyle (25.44) and 100 backstroke (59.99).

Also winning for the Billiken women were Laura Robertson (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) in the 1000 freestyle (11:00.64), Katie Robertson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.98), Erin Carlyle (Penticton, British Columbia/Lindenwood) in the 100 freestyle (55.27) and Jessica Schwarz (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) in the 500 freestyle (5:25.97). The Saint Louis women touched first in both relays as well. The 200 medley relay quartet of Lindsey Tamkun (Germantown, Tenn./Houston), Ramirez, Jordan Hagar (Plattsmouth, Neb./Marian) and Julia Pearson (Omaha, Neb./Westside) had a winning time of 1:51.03, and the 200 freestyle relay foursome of Emily Triggs (Edina, Minn./Edina), Carlyle, Bennet and Pearson clocked a 1:42.99.
 

 

The men's team also featured a trio of double winners. Justin Breithaupt (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) won the 1000 freestyle (10:01.13) and 500 freestyle (4:54.94), Brad Byars (Marion, Ill./Marion) topped the field in the 50 freestyle (21.70) and 100 freestyle (47.16), and Kevin Parker (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers) collected victories in the 200 individual medley (2:02.09) and 100 backstroke (53.95).

Joining that group on the winner's stand for the Bills were Adam Trafton (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis University High) in the 200 freestyle (1:45.73), Stephen Sheridan (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) in the 100 butterfly (53.24) and Sal Cruz (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.83). SLU also won the 200 medley relay, with Parker, Cruz, Sheridan and Byars turning in the winning time of 1:39.52).

The Billikens return to the pool on Saturday, hosting Illinois-Chicago in a dual meet at Simon Recreation Center that starts at 2 p.m.
