Laura Coyer Named Academic All-District

June 6, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis senior runner Laura Coyer (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) was named to the 2008 ESPN the Magazine women's track and field/cross country Academic All-District second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A nursing major, Coyer was one of the top two runners on the Billikens' cross country squad that finished seventh at the Atlantic 10 Championships, its best finish since joining the league. She eclipsed the school record in the 5K at the Brooks Memphis Twilight, finishing in 18:07.05 which was good for sixth overall out of 330 participants.

During the indoor track and field season, Coyer placed seventh in the mile at the A-10 Championships with a school-record mark of 5:02.25. She also ran the final leg on SLU's distance medley relay team that finished second at the A-10s with a time of 12:08.05.

Coyer continued her record-setting senior season during the outdoor track and field campaign. She placed fifth in the 1,500 meters at the A-10 Championships with a mark of 4:40.92. She also ran a leg on SLU's 4x800-meter relay team that finished second at the A-10s with a school-record time of 9:06.28. Coyer established the school record in the 1,500 meters at the prestigious John McDonnell Invitational at the University of Arkansas, winning the event in 4:36.34. She also holds the school record in the 5,000 meters (17:39.34).

The Academic All-District award, which is a first for the cross country/track and field program at SLU, is Coyer's third academic honor this season. Previously, she was named to the Atlantic 10's All-Academic Teams for indoor and outdoor track and field.
