Casey Moore Named Baseball MVP

May 28, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis senior catcher Casey Moore (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Holt) was named Billiken baseball's Most Valuable Player, while junior right-hander Scott Turmail (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) was tabbed the program's Pitcher of the Year.

The honors were announced by first-year head coach Darin Hendrickson, who led the Billikens to a 24-29 record, an increase of six victories from last year. It is the second-highest win total the Billikens have achieved this decade. Also, Hendrickson's 24 victories are the most for a SLU baseball coach in his first season.

Moore, who returned for a fifth year and was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference's All-Academic Team, was a workhorse behind the plate, starting 50 games. He caught every game in A-10 action and finished the regular season second in the league in runners caught stealing (24).

Turmail led the pitching staff with a 7-6 record and a 3.12 ERA. He pitched into the seventh inning in all 13 starts this year and went eight-plus innings in nine of those games. In the most recent NCAA statistical report, Turmail ranks third in the country in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (0.95). A two-time A-10 Pitcher of the Week honoree, he also recorded two saves out of the bullpen.

Junior third baseman Tom Pinnell (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and sophomore center fielder J.D. Dunn (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial) ranked second and third on the team in hitting with averages of .326 and .317, respectively. In addition, the two started all 53 games for the Billikens. Junior shortstop Ryan Bennett (Kansas City, Mo./Rockhurst), an honorable mention All-Conference selection, led the team in hitting with a .357 batting average. Sophomore second baseman Andrew Guerra (Dallas, Texas/Rice) finished with a .298 average and broke the SLU single-season record with 21 doubles.

Junior right-hander Dave Sever (Burr Ridge, Ill./Benet Academy) led the pitching staff with 80 strikeouts, which ranks sixth all-time at SLU in a single season. He has 199 career Ks through three seasons, which are the sixth most in school history. In addition, his 16 career victories are tied for the fourth most in the SLU record book, and his 276 innings pitched are the fifth most in schoo
