Baseball Players Thrive in Summer Leagues

ST. LOUIS - Numerous Saint Louis University baseball players have succeeded in various summer leagues this off season. Below are a few highlights of summer baseball action from around the country that featured returning and incoming Billiken baseball players. Jon Myers (St. Peters, Mo./Ft. Zumwalt South), an incoming junior-college transfer from Meramec Community College, made the all-star game of the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL) as a member of the Quincy Gems. He is hitting .294 with 10 doubles and a league-leading 13 home runs. Myers also leads the league with 99 total bases, a .607 slugging percentage and 38 runs scored. A pair of Billikens have helped their teams in the Coastal Plain League to first-place finishes in the first half of the year. Senior Ryan Bennett (Kansas City, Mo./Rockhurst) is hitting .287 with two home runs and 13 RBIs for the Edenton Steamers. Junior Andrew Guerra (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit) is hitting .242 with five doubles and nine RBIs with the Florence Redwolves. Incoming junior Danny Brock (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View) and senior pitcher Chaz Salembier (Brentwood, Mo./Clayton) teamed up to help the Laramie Colts to the Mountain Collegiate League championship. Brock, who transfers to SLU from Northeastern (Colo.) Community College, was named team MVP after hitting .367 with a team-leading 24 RBIs. In addition, he won the league's home run derby with an impressive 21 home. Salembier was the Colts' closer, posting a 2.67 ERA with six saves. He struck out 22 batters in 19 innings pitched.
Junior J.D. Dunn (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial) helped the East Texas PumpJacks to a Texas Collegiate League playoff appearance. He finished second on the squad in doubles. A number of Billikens were added to the all-star game of the St. Louis Metro Collegiate League. Junior Zach Outman (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) hit a league-leading .391 with five home runs and 21 RBIs for Arnold. Senior Scott Turmail (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) went 5-1 with a league-high 49 strikeouts for Clayton. Senior Ryan Johnson (Creve Coeur, Mo./SLUH) finished eighth in the league and first on his Brentwood squad with a .339 batting average. Sophomore Ramee Yacoub (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) hit .304 with 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored for Bridgeton. Junior Mike Beal (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH), who played with Kirkwood this summer, hit a pair of home runs. |
