Baseball Alumni Weekend a Success

Sept. 29, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis head baseball coach Darin Hendrickson and his team held their inaugural Billiken Baseball Alumni Weekend Sept. 26-29. Activities included a golf tournament, a St. Louis Cardinals game and an exhibition game pitting the current Billikens against the alumni.

"We had a great turnout, and I appreciate the support from all the alumni," Hendrickson said. "It was a tremendous weekend overall. We have a wonderful group of alumni, and I am happy our current team got a chance to meet our former players."

The weekend was capped off by the Alumni Game, which the current squad took 11-4. Highlights included the play of Cody Cotter, who reached base and scored three times from the leadoff spot. Ryan Bennett, the team's top hitter last season, also reached three times. Zach Miller had four hits, while David Blackwell singled and tripled.

Scott Turmail picked up the win on the hill and struck out five. Dave Sever threw two scoreless innings. Mike Orrico (1999-2001) and Ryan Crespi (2006-07) homered for the alumni.

"Sunday was great because the alumni gave us a competitive game," Hendrickson said. "It was nice for our guys to compete against someone other than themselves."

The Billikens have three weeks remaining in their fall exhibition season. They begin the 2009 campaign Feb. 20 at a tournament in Bakersfield, Calif.
