May 7, 2006
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - Saint Louis concluded its men's golf tenure with a ninth-place finish among the 13 teams at the Atlantic 10 Championship at Orange County National Golf Club Sunday afternoon. Senior Barry O'Neill wrapped up his career with a top 20 finish, despite a final-round 77, with a tournament total of 218 (+2). Charlotte claimed the team title by three strokes over Xavier, as the 49ers placed all five players in the individual top nine. The Billikens entered the final day of competition in eighth place, just three strokes ahead of Dayton. SLU switched places with the Flyers after the Billikens posted a 298 to Dayton's 290 on Sunday. SLU's three-round total of 890 was highlighted by a second-round 290, in which all four scorers shot 75 or lower. Behind O'Neill, junior Ryan Blechle took 32nd place with a 221 total. Blechle opened the tournament with a 74 on Friday then followed with a 71 on Saturday and a final-round 76. Senior John Campbell continued his comeback from a first-round 80, following Saturday's 75 with a final-round 72 to claim 45th place in the 65-golfer tournament. Senior David Perritt struggled in his final collegiate outing, posting rounds of 84, 75 and 73 to finish 51st. Freshman Collin Piercy rounded out the SLU team in 54th place as he carded an 84, 75 and 73, over the three-day event. Sunday's final round closed out the Billikens' first and last Atlantic 10 Championship as SLU reclassified golf as a club sport earlier this spring.
