No. 22 Billikens Play to 1-1 Draw Against No. 14 Northwestern
Aug. 25, 2007
ST. LOUIS - No. 22 Saint Louis got a goal from Calum Angus and Northwestern's David Roth netted the equalizer as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition match tonight at Hermann Stadium. The teams opted not to play an overtime period. "Northwestern is a very disciplined team who can hurt you in a lot of ways, so I`m happy that we came out tonight and played like we did," Billiken head coach Dan Donigan said. "This is why I like playing a team like Northwestern, because it gives us a good indication where we are as a team. Right now, I`m happy with where we are heading into our season opener on the road at SMU." Angus netted the Bills` goal in the 23rd minute. After collecting the ball near midfield, he raced to the top of the box, beat a defender, and sent a laser into the upper-right corner for SLU`s first goal of the preaseason. Northwestern answered in the 34th minute after being awarded a penalty kick. David Roth, a 2007 Hermann Trophy candidate, connected on the free shot by sending the ball to the upper-left corner. SLU starting goalkeeper Pat Disbennett guessed correctly on the chance, but the ball was just out of the reach of the sprawling keepers' gloves. Otherwise, Disbennett was solid in the net for SLU. NU`s Eamon O`Neill collected the ball at the top of the box and was in all alone, but Disbennett stoned him from point-blank range to preserve the scoreless game at that point. NU keeper Misha Rosenthal was equally impressive. SLU midfielder Brandon Barklage, a New Mexico transfer making his first appearance in a Billiken uniform, slid to connect on a Tim Ream cross, but the ball went just wide of the goal. Several minutes later, SLU midfielder Kyle Patterson danced around in the box to generate a good look, but his shot was stopped by Rosenthal.
While the overall momentum seemed to shift in NU's favor in the second half, it was the Billikens that had the best of the quality opportunities. Freshman forward Charles Bryce appeared to score the go-ahead goal late in the game, but the tally was waved as the Bills were off-side. In the waning minutes, SLU substitute keeper Ross Kaufman broke up a Northwestern chance, and freshman back Casey Herd disrupted a NU bid for the game winner. The Billikens out-shot the Wildcats 13-7, while NU held the advantage in corner kicks by a 6-4 margin. SLU travels to No. 8 SMU for the regular-season opener next Friday, Aug. 31. Kickoff from Dallas is slated for 7 p.m. |
