ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis head men's soccer coach Dan Donigan today announced five additions to his 2008 roster. Lucas Dyer (Mission, Texas/Sharyland), Evan Johnson (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), Alex Johnston (Plano, Texas/Jesuit Prep), Dan Olwig (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) and Daniel Wrzosek (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) have all agreed to attend the University and play soccer for the Billikens. They begin their four years of eligibility this fall. Dyer and Johnson are goalkeepers who will provide depth behind returning keepers Pat Disbennett and Ross Kaufman. Dyer was a four-year letterwinner at Sharyland High School, where he was a first-team All-District selection. In addition, he played club soccer for the San Antonio Classics Elite (2004-06) and the Houston Dynamo U-18 Academy Team (2007-08). In 2008, Dyer was a first-team All-Valley and All-Region selection, and he was the Texas Coaches Association State All-Star Showcase MVP. Johnson played three seasons at York Community, including 2005 when the Dukes earned a top-15 ranking in Illinois. He played five seasons with the Chicago Magic club team, participating in the Dallas Cup in 2004 and embarking on a tour of Spain which included matches against Espanol and FC Barcelona. Currently, Johnson is training with the Chicago Fire PDL and U-20 teams.
"Lucas has good athleticism and is very quick, and Evan is a solid goalkeeper who will provide competition for the position on a daily basis," Donigan said. "Both will provide depth and security at the position, something that we have had to rely on in the past. I expect both of them to continue to develop and be contributors down the road." Johnston, who was prep teammates with current Billikens Beau Bellomy and Charles Bryce at Jesuit Prep in Dallas, was a starting defender for a Ranger team that yielded just 11 goals in 26 games in 2008. He also netted three goals while anchoring a defense that posted 18 shutouts. Johnston has played with the prestigious Solar Soccer Club in Dallas and was a defender/midfielder on the 2007 squad that was crowned champions at Score at the Shore. "Alex is a versatile defender who can play a number of positions," Donigan said. "We are considering him as a wide back or wide midfielder. He has a solid skill set and a great competitive edge that will help him contribute in a variety of ways in both training and games." Olwig picked up honorable-mention All-Metro honors from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after helping his CBC squad to a 23-6-1 mark in 2008. The versatile defender notched a goal and two assists while helping solidify a defense that yielded 29 goals. In addition to his prep career, Olwig played in the midfield for St. Louis Scott Gallagher soccer club. "Dan is an experienced and intelligent player, having played at CBC and for Scott Gallagher," Donigan said. "We expect him to compete for playing time in the midfield and provide depth to the position." Wrzosek played in the central midfield at Loyola Academy his senior year and helped the Ramblers to a 15-3-2 record and its first-ever Catholic League championship. Additionally, he played for the Chicago Wind Soccer Club as a central midfielder. "Daniel uses his size and strength to his advantage as he is an aggressive central player," Donigan said. "He will add depth to our midfield and has the versatility to possibly turn into a defender down the road." The five newcomers join a recruiting class that already includes defender Brent Hellesen (Orange, Calif./Pateadores/Orange Lutheran), midfielder James Jaramillo (Orem, Utah/Mountain View/UCLA), defender Tyler McNabb (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Metro United/Cape Central), forward Jonas Reiter (Redondo, Calif./Pateadores/South Torrence) and defender/midfielder Keegan Smith (Dallas, Texas/Solar SC/J.J. Pearce). |
