Brian McBride Named to Olympic Team

July 18, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University soccer great Brian McBride is one of 18 players who will represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing next month. The announcement was made by U.S. Men's Olympic Team head coach Peter Nowak.

One of the most decorated players in United States soccer history, McBride has appeared in three World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006). He is the only U.S. player to score in multiple World Cups. In all, he earned 95 caps with the National Team and scored 30 goals.

Most recently, McBride played with Fulham FC in the English Premier League. He earned captaincy in 2007 after leading the club with 12 goals in 2006-07.

The first overall pick in Major League Soccer's inaugural draft, McBride enjoyed an eight-year career with the Columbus Crew. He amassed 62 goals and 45 assists in 161 games. In May, McBride announced his desire to return to the United States and play in MLS.

Ten Billikens have represented the United States in the Olympic Games, with Matt McKeon being the most recent in 1996.

McBride had an illustrious four-year career at SLU beginning in 1990. The two-time All-American is the Billikens' all-time leading scorer with 184 points (72G, 40A). In 2002, he became the first Billiken men's soccer player to have his number retired.
