Three Billikens Named to MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

Aug. 19, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis seniors Calum Angus (Portsmouth, England), Kyle Patterson (Birmingham, England) and Eric Sweetin (Overland Park, Kan./Rockhurst) landed on the 2008 men's soccer Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List, as released today by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The Hermann Trophy, which is considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, will be awarded in downtown St. Louis on Jan. 9, 2009, at the Missouri Athletic Club. In November, the 48-member watch list will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists, with three finalists to be announced in early December.

Angus, a defender, earned second-team All-America honors from the NSCAA last season. The reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year anchors a Billiken defense that yielded a league-low 13 goals in 2007. Offensively, Angus has 17 points (7G, 3A) to his credit, including a game-winner in each of his first three seasons. He was named second-team All-Conference following his sophomore season, and as a freshman was named honorable mention All-Conference in addition to earning a spot on the A-10 All-Rookie team.

Patterson, a midfielder, is the Billikens' leading returning scorer after netting 24 points (10G, 4A) last season. He earned first-team All-Region plaudits from the NSCAA and was tabbed the A-10's Offensive Player of the Year. Patterson tallied six goals in A-10 play, including three straight against Saint Joseph's in 2 minutes, 31 seconds, which is the second-fastest natural hat trick in NCAA history. He is the Billikens' active career points leader with 44 (17G, 10A).

Sweetin, a midfielder, appears on the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List for the second year in a row. Sweetin missed a large portion of the 2007 campaign with an ankle injury but bounced back to start the final seven matches of the season. During that time, he was a cog in the central midfield as the Billikens went on to allow only three goals and post four shutouts. For his effort, he earned first-team All-Region honors in addition to claiming an All-Conference first-team nod. Sweetin was the A-10 Rookie of the Year in 2005 and picked up first-team All-Conference honors in 2006.

SLU joins Connecticut and defending national champion Wake Forest as clubs with three players on the list. The Huskies, led by last year's Hermann Trophy winner O'Brian White, face the Billikens at Hermann Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The Hermann Trophy Watch List includes seven student-athletes the Billikens will face in 2008. They are: White, Adeem Priestly and Toni Stahl, UConn; Byron Dacy and Andrei Gotsmanov, Creighton; John Parkini, Fordham; and Alex Torda, Dayton.
