Honors Roll in for SLU Soccer
Nov. 16, 2009
ST. LOUIS - A day after helping the Billikens claim the Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer title, sophomore forward Mike Roach (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) has been named to several National Teams of the Week for his play in SLU's two victories in the A-10 Championship. Roach, who was tabbed Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Championship, earned National Team of the Week recognition today from Soccer America, CollegeSoccerNews.com and TopDrawerSoccer.com. In Friday's 3-2 semifinal win against host Rhode Island, Roach scored a goal and assisted on another to help vault the Billikens into the A-10 title match. Against Dayton in Sunday's final, Roach notched an insurance marker to give the Billikens the A-10 crown and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. For the season, Roach leads the team with 22 points (10G, 2A) despite missing five games due to injury. Senior defender Tim Ream (St. Louis, Mo./St. Dominic), who notched the game-winning goal against Rhode Island, was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team. Senior midfielder Josh Aranda (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) also earned a spot on the All-Championship team after playing all 180 minutes in a defensive-midfield position. Senior keeper Ross Kaufman (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual), who was in the net for SLU's two A-10 Championship victories, moved into third place all-time on SLU's goalkeeping charts with 33 career wins. SLU also appeared in several national polls released Monday morning. Soccer America ranks the Billikens 23rd in the nation, while CollegeSoccerNews.com has the Bills 29th. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Soccer Times coaches' polls will be released later this week.
Saint Louis, which will be making its fourth straight and unprecedented 46th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament, will learn its opponent Monday evening when the brackets are announced at approximately 4:30 p.m. St. Louis time on ESPNews. The team will gather at Humphrey's Restaurant adjacent to the SLU campus to watch the announcement. Humphrey's is located at 3700 Laclede Ave., St. Louis, MO 63108. |
