Four Billikens Earn Atlantic 10 Honors
May 13, 2009
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis juniors Ken Nordheim (Oslo, Norway/Wang) and James McArthur (Melbourne, Australia/Geelong) were selected to the Atlantic 10 men's tennis All-Conference first team by a vote of the league's head coaches, marking the first time in program history the Billikens have had two first-team All-Conference choices. Freshman Jake Hendrie (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) was named to the second team, giving SLU three All-Conference picks in consecutive seasons, while senior Adam Reeb (Belleville, Ill./Althoff) garnered a spot on the Academic All-Conference team for a third successive year. Nordheim played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in his first season at Saint Louis after transferring from Louisville. He registered a 21-8 singles mark, just one victory shy of tying SLU's single-season record, and was one of three Bills to set the school standard for doubles wins this season by posting a 20-6 ledger. Nordheim was 12-4 in dual-meet singles play and teamed with McArthur for a 14-4 slate in dual-meet doubles action, including two victories at the A-10 Championship. He was the consolation singles bracket runner-up at the ITA Central Region Championships last October. McArthur, also a first-year transfer from Louisville, filled the No. 2 singles spot and posted a 14-11 record. His 10-8 mark in dual-meet competition included two A-10 Championship triumphs. McArthur tallied a 19-6 doubles record, turning in the second-highest doubles victory total in program annals.
Hendrie finished 15-10 in singles, including a 9-6 dual-meet slate while splitting time between the Nos. 3 and 4 positions. His 15 wins are tied for fifth on SLU's all-time single-season chart. Hendrie tied the school standard for doubles wins, assembling a 20-7 overall record. His 12-5 dual-meet ledger with Sean McManus at No. 2 included a 3-0 mark at the A-10 Championship.
Reeb, a leadership and change management major, produced career highs in total wins (21) and doubles wins (15). He was 15-10 in doubles, tying for 12th on the Bills' all-time single-season victories list, and added a 6-5 singles record. Reeb concluded his tenure ranked seventh in doubles wins (38) and tied for 18th in singles wins (21) on SLU's career charts. Saint Louis placed fourth at the A-10 Championship, its best showing in four years of A-10 membership, and won seven of its last nine matches to finish 14-7. Coupled with last year's 11-10 slate, SLU has turned in consecutive winning seasons for the first time since the 1977-78 and 1978-79 teams accomplished the feat.
