Miami (Ohio) Edges Billikens 85-83 in Consolation Game
Nov. 26, 2006 Seattle, Wash. - Miami's Amanda Jackson hit two free throws with 13.6 seconds left as the RedHawks defeated the Saint Louis Billikens 85-83 in the consolation game of the Basketball Travelers Husky Classic on Sunday afternoon in Seattle. The Billikens had scored eight straight points to tie the game at 83-83 had a shot at the buzzer to win the contest, but Theresa Lisch's 3-pointer was just long. The Billikens rode hot-shooting to jump out to a quick 10-5 lead. The RedHawks answered and tied the game at 12-12. Miami edged out to a 20-15 lead, but the Billikens came right back to tie it on two free throws by Rachel Diener and a trey by Tyler McIlwraith. The RedHawks scored to retake a 22-20 advantage, but a Diener 3-pointer from the left corner pushed the Billikens back on top 23-22 with just over eight minutes left in the first half. Miami retook the lead with two free throws and a basket. The RedHawks were up four, but inside baskets by Jackie Gilbert and Maggie Hennegan tied the game at 33-33 at the 3:26 mark. Miami hit back-to-back 3-pointers and out-scored the Billikens 10-2 before settling for a 47-40 lead at halftime. The Billikens shot 55.6 percent from the field but hurt themselves with 17 turnovers. McIlwraith scored on two straight fast break drives to pull SLU to 47-44 to open the second half. The Billikens continued the run after break and tied the game on a Cara Young jumper from the wing. After a Miami turnover, McIlwraith converted an easy basket to edge the Billikens out to a 50-48 lead at the 16:13 mark. After six misses to open the half, Miami sank a 3-pointer, but the Billikens got consecutive runners in the lane by Amanda Kemezys and Hennegan for a 54-51 lead. A Young follow put the Billikes up 56-53, but the RedHawks hit two jumpers in traffic for a one-point margin at the 12 minute mark.
McIlwraith scored five in a row for the Billikens to cut the MU lead to two at 65-63. Miami still only led by one but hit four straight free throws to build a 71-67 lead with six minutes remaining. The Billikens were still only down five but missed a layup, and the RedHawks rattled in a trey for a 74-67 lead with 4:49 to go. Theresa Lisch scored six straight points for SLU to keep the Billikens close. Miami hit a trey for an 83-75 lead, but McIlwraith answered with a 3-pointer to keep the margin at five. The Billikens forced a turnover, and Lisch drilled a deep trey to cut the gap to 83-81 with 1:11 left. Diener stole the ball, and McIlwraith hit two free throws with 37.7 left to tie the game. However, the comeback fell short when Miami's Amanda Jackson hit two free throws with 13.6 seconds left to put the RedHawks in front 85-83. The Billikens took a 3-pointer at the buzzer which bounced out long. Tyler McIlwraith scored 23 points to lead the Billikens, while Amanda Kemezys and Theresa Lisch both chipped in 11. Maggie Hennegan led the Billikens with nine rebounds. Amanda Jackson led Miami with 28 points. The Billikens suffer their second straight loss and dip to 5-2, while the RedHawks improve to 3-3. |
