Billikens Host La Salle in "Blue Out" Game

COMING UP - The Saint Louis Billikens (7-16, 1-7 A-10) host La Salle (5-18, 0-8 A-10) Wednesday, Feb. 10, in a 7 p.m. contest at Chaifetz Arena. The game has been designated the "Billiken Blue Out," and fans are encouraged to participate by wearing blue. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free "Billiken Blue Out" T-shirt. FOLLOWING THE ACTION - All home games are audio streamed live and free of charge on radio station KSLU's Web site, kslu.slu.edu, and live stats are available free of charge on GameTracker at www.slubillikens.com. All Billiken home games are video streamed live on the Internet via Billiken All-Access at www.slubillikens.com. Subscriptions are available for $79.95 annually or $9.95 a month. LAST TIME OUT - Lauren Woods scored a game-high 17 points in the Billikens' 73-54 loss at Dayton Feb. 7. Katie Paganelli was 4-of-6 from 3-point range and tallied 14 points, while Amanda Kemezys collected a game-high 10 rebounds. Janisha Gearlds scored eight points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds, including a career-high five offensive boards. ABOUT THE BILLIKENS - Lauren Woods leads Saint Louis in scoring (13.7 ppg), followed by Amanda Kemezys (12.6 ppg) and Katie Paganelli (11.2 ppg). Kemezys tops the SLU charts in rebounding (9.3 rpg), offensive rebounding (3.1 orpg) and blocks (15). Paganelli leads the team in free-throw percentage (.872) and 3-pointers (43), while Jacy Bradley has 24 treys. Janisha Gearlds leads the Billikens with 67 assists and 31 steals, while Bradley has 56 assists and 30 steals. Kathryn Hester owns a team-high .510 shooting mark from the field.
SCOUTING LA SALLE - The Explorers have four starters and four additional letterwinners back from last year's 10-19 team that tied for 13th (1-13) in the A-10. Senior forward Morgan Robertson (10.4 ppg) and senior guard Jamie Walsh (9.4 ppg) are La Salle's top two scorers, with Walsh ranking fourth in the A-10 in 3-point field goals per game (2.0). Robertson leads the Explorers in rebounding (6.1 rpg), while senior guard Tara Lapetina and junior guard Ashley Gale lead the team with 54 assists and 45 steals, respectively. Gale is sixth in the conference in steals per game (2.0). Head coach Tom Lochner is 69-98 in six seasons, all at La Salle. THE LA SALLE SERIES - Saint Louis evened the series at 2-2 in dramatic fashion last season, claiming a 77-73 overtime decision in Philadelphia in a game that saw Theresa Lisch score a school-record 37 points. The Explorers won 61-42 when the teams last met in St. Louis two seasons ago. KEMEZYS SELECTED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT - Senior center Amanda Kemezys was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 women's basketball second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Kemezys' selection to the Academic All-District team is her first and the fifth for the SLU women's basketball program, four of which have occurred during head coach Shimmy Gray-Miller's tenure. She is an education major with a concentration in middle-school mathematics. BILLIKENS IN THE A-10 STATISTICAL RANKINGS (ALL GAMES) - The Billikens are second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in free-throw attempts per game (19.9) and also rank in the upper half of the league in 3-point field-goal percentage defense (fourth, .305), free-throw percentage (sixth, .699), fewest turnovers per game (sixth, 17.8), offensive rebounding (sixth, 13.3 orpg) and scoring offense (seventh, 61.6 ppg). Individually, Amanda Kemezys is third in the league in rebounding (9.3 rpg), fourth in offensive rebounding (3.1 orpg), ninth in field-goal percentage (.482) and 12th in scoring (12.6 ppg). Lauren Woods is fifth in scoring (13.7 ppg), and Katie Paganelli is seventh in 3-point field goals per game (1.9). BILLIKENS IN THE A-10 STATISTICAL RANKINGS (CONFERENCE GAMES) - In conference games only, the Billikens rank second in 3-point field-goal percentage defense (.276), third in free-throw percentage (.727) and fourth in steals (7.9 spg) and turnover margin (+1.4). Individually, Amanda Kemezys is fifth in offensive rebounding (3.1 rpg) and seventh in rebounding (8.3 rpg), while Lauren Woods is eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7:1), ninth in assists (3.4 apg), 11th in scoring (12.9 ppg) and 15th in free-throw percentage (.710). Katie Paganelli ranks third in 3-point field goals per game (2.4) and 11th in 3-point field-goal percentage (.373), and Kathryn Hester is 14th in field-goal percentage (.453). BILLS IN THE NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS - Through games of Feb. 7, Amanda Kemezys ranks 48th nationally in rebounding. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED - Katie Paganelli became the 14th Saint Louis women's basketball player to score 1,000 points when she buried a 3-pointer against Evansville Dec. 6. Paganelli has 1,163 career points, good for 13th place in SLU annals. In the Oakland game Dec. 17, Amanda Kemezys became the 15th Billiken to achieve the milestone with a basket late in the first half. Kemezys is now 14th on the Saint Louis career list with 1,144 points. KEMEZYS ASSAULTS RECORD BOOK - On the Saint Louis career lists, Amanda Kemezys is fourth in rebounds (761), fifth in blocks (76) and eighth in free throws made (260). Kemezys needs 67 points to claim a top-10 spot in that category. She also is in position to finish among the top 10 in rebounding average (current career average 7.6), field-goal percentage (currently .497) and free-throw percentage (currently .734). In addition, Kemezys is on pace to break SLU's single-season record for rebounds. She has 215 caroms, and the school mark is 267 set by Jamie Cavaness in the 1995-96 campaign. PAGANELLI MOVING UP - Katie Paganelli is third on SLU's career 3-point field goals list with 155 and needs 10 treys to take over second place. Her two steals against Dayton gave her 122 for her career, good for 10th in program history. Paganelli needs 22 assists and 48 points to secure top-10 spots. With a career .779 free-throw mark, she has a chance to finish among the top five in SLU history. NECK AND NECK - In addition to being just 19 points apart in career scoring, Katie Paganelli and Amanda Kemezys are battling for bragging rights in another category. Paganelli has 61 career double-figure scoring performances, while Kemezys has 60. BILLS SIZZLING AT THE LINE - Saint Louis has shot at least 70 percent from the free-throw line in 10 of its last 14 games. The Billikens are 192-of-262 (.733) during that stretch. DEFENDING THE ARC - The Billiken defense has stymied opponents from beyond the arc in recent games. Saint Louis has allowed three or fewer treys in seven of the last 10 games and nine of the last 14 contests. Billiken opponents are a combined 35-of-134 (.261) in the last 10 outings. HEATING UP AT THE STRIPE - Lauren Woods has become one of the Billikens' most reliable foul shooters. Woods is 85-of-115 (.739) from the stripe in the last 16 outings. She had a career-high 13 free-throw attempts against Tennessee Tech, followed with 12 against Bradley and tallied 10 against Massachusetts and Dayton. Now with 242 career free throws, Woods needs 13 to crack SLU's top-10 list. A LOOK AHEAD - Saint Louis embarks on a two-game road swing to the East Coast. The Billikens take on Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia Saturday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. (CT). SLU completes the trip Tuesday, Feb. 16, with a 6 p.m. (CT) contest at Fordham in Bronx, N.Y. |
