Brown Named Assistant Coach
May 29, 2008
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University head women's basketball coach Shimmy Gray-Miller has announced the hiring of Honey Brown as assistant coach. Brown, who returns to coaching after spending five years as director and lead trainer at Performance Training, Inc. in Orlando, Fla., begins her duties on Monday, June 2. "Honey came highly recommended to us by people in the business who I respect," Gray-Miller said. "Once our staff got a chance to meet with her and talk basketball, we understood why she is so highly regarded. Honey is a basketball coach, no doubt about it. She loves the game, respects the game and can teach the game. She is looking forward to helping us advance as a team and program. "It was very important that we bring in someone who has similar visions and direction and who also will bring a fresh perspective to our staff, and Honey certainly will do that," Gray-Miller added. "When we first sat down to talk to her, it just clicked. Her passion was very obvious to us. I am thrilled that she decided to continue her coaching career with the Billikens, and our players are excited to start working with her." "I am excited about joining the Billiken family," Brown said. "Shimmy and her staff have done a great job with this program, and I am thankful for the opportunity. The Atlantic 10 is a competitive conference, and I look forward to the challenge of working with our coaches and players to win a championship." Brown's previous collegiate coaching experience consists of a four-year tenure as an assistant at Ohio University and a one-year stint as an assistant at the University of Central Florida. She helped guide the 1998-99 Central Florida team to a 20-10 record, the Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season and tournament championships and an NCAA Tournament berth. Brown's coaching background also includes four years as an assistant at Lenoir City (Tenn.) High School.
Brown is a 1994 graduate of Maryville (Tenn.) College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry for secondary education and was a four-year member of the basketball team. She helped lead the Scots to three appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament round of 16, served as co-captain her junior and senior years and was third in the nation in 3-point field-goal percentage in her junior campaign. Brown replaces Petra Jackson, who resigned to pursue other opportunities. "Coach Jackson did a wonderful job as a Billiken, and I will be eternally grateful for her commitment to this program," Gray-Miller said. "I fully support her desire to pursue other professional opportunities, and I have the utmost respect for her as a coach and friend." The Billikens will play in the University's new on-campus facility, the 10,600-seat Chaifetz Arena, in the 2008-09 season. |
