Missouri State Holds Off Billikens 3-2
Sept. 5, 2008 Fenton, Mo. - Despite two second-half goals from sophomore midfielder Stephanie Ertzberger the Saint Louis field hockey team dropped its home opener 3-2 to Missouri State on Friday at the Anheuser-Busch Center. Melissa Lantz tallied in the sixth minute on a deflection to put the Bears on top 1-0. Kristen Pettey increased the MSU lead to two with a shot from in front at the 11:49 mark. Freshman goalie Alex LaBarge made six saves in the first half to keep the Billikens within striking range at intermission. Ertzberger drew the Billikens to one when she collected a shot by Jacklyn McGranahan and slotted in a shot in the 39th minute of play. Stephanie Chase rebuilt the MSU lead to 3-1 when she scored the eventual game winner just inside the left post at the 46:25 mark. The Billikens pressed forward to trim the gap, and Ertzberger struck again with 33 seconds left to play in the game. The Billikens had one more late charge but could not find the equalizer. Ertzberger has scored in all three SLU games this season and has tallied four times to lead the team. The Billikens fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Bears remain unbeaten at 3-0. The Billikens are back in action at home when Indiana visits on Sunday, Sept. 7, for a 1 p.m. contest.
