Field Hockey Begins Season in Ohio

LET'S GET IT STARTED: The Saint Louis field hockey team begins the 2008 season this week with two games in Athens, Ohio. The Billikens play James Madison at 1:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Aug. 30. SLU faces Georgetown at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday, Aug. 31. AT SEASON'S END: The Billikens ended the 2007 season with a 4-15 record overall, 2-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Billikens just missed out on a bid to the A-10 Tournament, finishing sixth in the league standings. HOME OPENER: The Billikens begin the home portion of the slate on Friday, Sept. 5, when they host intrastate rival Missouri State for a 1 p.m. game at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, Mo. Indiana visits on Sunday, Sept. 7, for a 1 p.m. contest. ABOUT JAMES MADISON: The Dukes posted a 19-4 record last season and were ranked No. 7 in the final coaches' poll. Melissa Stefaniak led JMU with 14 goals and 33 points last season, while Meghan Bain was second on the team with 11 goals and 24 points. Goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchings returns after notching all 19 wins in the cage a year ago with a 0.93 GAA. Head coach Antoinette Lucas is 49-37 beginning her fifth year at JMU. Lucas was an assistant coach at New Hampshire and coached SLU staffers Marcie Boyer and Lauren Bruce. ABOUT GEORGETOWN: The Hoyas are coming off a 2-15 slate from a year ago and are led by Katie Lochman, who scored 10 goals and finished with 22 points last year. Goalkeeper Deidre Crovo saw a majority of the time in the cage, making 14 starts. Head coach Tiffany Marsh begins her second season at Georgetown. COACHING STAFF: Head coach Marcie Boyer begins her third season at SLU with an 11-24 career mark. An assistant coach at SLU in 2004, Boyer spent the 2005 season as an assistant at A-10 rival West Chester before returning to the Billikens as the head coach in 2006. She is a 2003 graduate of New Hampshire. Boyer is assisted by fellow UNH grad Lauren Bruce.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named 14 members of the 2007 Saint Louis field hockey team to the Division I National Academic Squad. As a team, the Billikens joined five other Atlantic 10 teams in earning the NFHCA's Division I National Academic Team Award with a team GPA of at least 3.0. Only six schools had more than the Billikens' 14 selections. BOYNE IDENTITY: Junior forward Molly Boyne (Escondido, Calif. / San Pasqual) led the team with four goals, had one assist and finished with a team-high nine points last season ... earned honorable mention All-Conference honors. CB RADIO: Senior back Cathi Brownell (Oconomowoc, Wis. / University Lake) played in 16 games last season. THE DEEM TEAM: Sophomore keeper Katherine Deem (Fairview Park, Ohio / Magnificat) played in three games during the season ... made two saves. BURGER KING: Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Ertzberger (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) appeared in 14 games last year ... registered three shots. FRAMPED-UP: Senior back Christine Frampus (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) led the team with five assists last season and was tied for second on the team with seven points ... is a co-captain. DON'T MEZ WITH TEXAS: Sophomore midfielder Natalie Gamez (Fort Worth, Texas / Trinity Valley) played in 17 games a year ago with two starts ... had five shots on goal. SAAB POWERED: Senior midfielder Emily Kassab (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) played in eight games last season and made four starts ... scored first career goal at Missouri State. NICK OF TIME: Freshman forward Nicole Kent (Pewaukee, Wis. / Arrowhead) led Arrowhead High School to the Wisconsin state championship as a senior. BARGING AHEAD: Freshman keeper Alex LaBarge (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) was named the Player of the Year by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ... led Villa Duchesne to the 2007 Missouri state championship. HI AND LO: Junior midfielder Sarah Lohmann (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) did not play in 2007 due to injury. GOOD LUCK CHARM: Junior back Eva Luck (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) started all 19 games last year ... credited with three defensive saves ... picked up one point ... is a co-captain. GRAN SLAM: Senior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) tied for second on the team with three goals ... also had one assist to finish with seven points ... had a team-high 36 shots on goal. NO WAY: Freshman midfielder Lauren Noe (Prospect, Ky. / Assumption) was a first-team All-State selection as a senior and won the 2005 Kentucky state title. KELSEY'S KORNER: Sophomore forward Kelsey Shultz (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) played in all 19 games and earned six starts last season ... scored three goals and had one assist for seven points ... earned A-10 All-Rookie honors ... will be keeping a blog this season titled "Kelsey's Korner" available exclusively on www.slubillikens.com. FAST MOVING TRAYN: Sophomore back Kelsey Traynor (Denver, Colo. / St. Mary's) played in two games last season. SPIDER WEB: Sophomore midfielder Alex Weber (Prospect, Ky. / Country Day) played in all 19 games last year and earned 16 starts ... had three assists on the season ... named to the A-10 All-Rookie team. |
