Billikens Host Missouri State in Field Hockey Home Opener

THIS WEEK: The Saint Louis field hockey team begins the home portion of the slate on Friday, Sept. 5, when it hosts state rival Missouri State in a 1 p.m. game at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, Mo. Indiana visits on Sunday, Sept. 7, for a 1 p.m. contest. RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Billikens opened the 2008 season with 6-1 loss to No. 7 James Madison on Saturday. Stephanie Ertzberger scored her first career goal for SLU. The next day, the Billikens bounced back with a 4-0 triumph over Georgetown. Natalie Gamez scored the first two goals of her career, and Christine Frampus tied a school record with three assists against the Hoyas. ABOUT MISSOURI STATE: The Bears posted a 2-19 record last year but have already matched that victory total in 2008 with a 4-2 win against Appalachian State and a 2-1 decision over Robert Morris. Junior Melissa Lantz has scored three goals, while senior Jessica Schuster picked up both wins in the cage for the Bears. Dawn Callahan is 74-121 in her 11th season in Springfield. The Bears lead the all-time series 48-27-3, but the Billikens won both meetings last season by identical 1-0 scores. Cat Donovan scored the game winner in St. Louis, while Emily Kassab tallied her first career goal for the winner in Springfield. ABOUT INDIANA: The Hoosiers were 8-10 last season and are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss against Rutgers and a 3-1 win over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's. Five different players have scored the first five goals of the season for IU. Sophomore Alex Mann has been in the cage for every minute of the first two contests. Head coach Amy Robertson is in her ninth season with the Hoosiers and has a 67-79 record. COACHING STAFF: Head coach Marcie Boyer is in her third season at SLU with a 12-25 career mark. An assistant coach at SLU in 2004, Boyer spent the 2005 season as an assistant at A-10 rival West Chester before returning to the Billikens as the head coach in 2006. She is a 2003 graduate of New Hampshire. Boyer is assisted by fellow UNH grad Lauren Bruce.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named 14 members of the 2007 Saint Louis field hockey team to the Division I National Academic Squad. As a team, the Billikens joined five other Atlantic 10 teams in earning the NFHCA's Division I National Academic Team Award with a team GPA of at least 3.0. Only six schools had more than the Billikens' 14 selections. BIG WIN: The four-goal margin of victory over Georgetown was the largest for the Billikens since downing Robert Morris 4-0 on Sept. 24, 2006. THREE HELPERS: Christine Frampus tied the school record with three assists during the Georgetown game. The mark had been reached three previous times, the last time by Keri Brunner at Lindenwood on Oct. 19, 1999. BOYNE IDENTITY: Junior forward Molly Boyne (Escondido, Calif. / San Pasqual) started both the James Madison and Georgetown games. CB RADIO: Senior back Cathi Brownell (Oconomowoc, Wis. / University Lake) earned starts in the back for both games last weekend. THE DEEM TEAM: Sophomore keeper Katherine Deem (Fairview Park, Ohio / Magnificat) started the Georgetown game and was credited with three saves to notch the win ... recorded eight saves in the second half of the James Madison contest. BURGER KING: Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Ertzberger (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) tallied the fourth goal of the game against Georgetown ... scored her first career goal in the tilt against James Madison. FRAMPED-UP: Senior back Christine Frampus (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) tied the school record with three assists against Georgetown ... next assist will be the 10th of her career ... is a co-captain. DON'T MEZ WITH TEXAS: Sophomore midfielder Natalie Gamez (Fort Worth, Texas / Trinity Valley) scored the first two goals of her career in the win over Georgetown ... started the JMU game. SAAB POWERED: Senior midfielder Emily Kassab (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) was in the starting lineup for both the Georgetown and James Madison games. NICK OF TIME: Freshman forward Nicole Kent (Pewaukee, Wis. / Arrowhead) registered a shot against Georgetown ... came off the bench in the opener against James Madison. BARGING AHEAD: Freshman keeper Alex LaBarge (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) played the second half of the Georgetown game and finished with two saves ... started the James Madison match and recorded two saves. HI AND LO: Junior midfielder Sarah Lohmann (Houston, Texas / Duchesne) came off the bench in both the Georgetown and James Madison games. GOOD LUCK CHARM: Junior back Eva Luck (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) helped limit Georgetown to just seven shots ... recorded a defensive save against James Madison ... is a co-captain. GRAN SLAM: Senior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) took five shots against Georgetown ... put a shot on goal against James Madison. NO WAY: Freshman midfielder Lauren Noe (Prospect, Ky. / Assumption) scored her first career goal, which proved to be the game winner against Georgetown ... played in the James Madison contest. KELSEY'S KORNER: Sophomore forward Kelsey Shultz (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) started both the Georgetown and James Madison games ... will be keeping a blog this season titled "Kelsey's Korner," available exclusively on www.slubillikens.com. FAST MOVING TRAYN: Sophomore back Kelsey Traynor (Denver, Colo. / St. Mary's) appeared off the bench in both games last weekend.
