THIS WEEK: The Saint Louis field hockey team (2-12, 0-2 Atlantic 10) heads out of town for two Atlantic 10 road matches this week. The Billikens play at La Salle on Friday, Oct. 12, in a 3 p.m. (CT) game in Philadelphia. SLU stays in the Keystone state when it heads to West Chester for an 11 a.m. (CT) contest on Sunday, Oct. 14.

ABOUT LA SALLE: The Explorers are 8-7 overall, 1-1 in the A-10. La Salle is tied with Temple in the A-10 for the most goals scored with 30. Kara Harpel ranks second in the league with nine goals and 20 points. Maria Allegretto and Colleen Lechner both had six goals and two assists apiece. Goalkeeper Ellen Alxelsen has a 1.68 goals against average and is second in the A-10 with 93 saves. Head coach Sarah Catlin is 40-91 in seven seasons as a coach. The Billikens are 3-0-1 all-time against La Salle.

ABOUT WEST CHESTER: The Rams stand at 3-9 overall, 0-2 in the A-10. West Chester ranks third in the league in goals per game at 1.75. Sara Conrad leads the team with seven goals and one assist, while Shelly Brooks is second with 11 points on five goals and one assist. Goalie Joelle Zarefoss has a 3.61 GAA and ranks second in the league in saves per game at 8.09. Head coach Kath Krannebitter is 203-219-15 in 22 years as a coach. The Billikens hold a 2-1-2 advantage in the series.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Billikens played well but dropped narrow decisions in their first two A-10 matches of the season. Kelsey Shultz put the Billikens in the lead against Saint Joseph's on Friday, but the Hawks rallied with two late goals to earn a 2-1 win. Jacklyn McGranahan tied the Temple tilt with a goal in the first half, but the Owls got a hat trick from A-10 leading scorer Allie Lokey en route to a 3-1 win over the Billikens on Sunday.

COACHING STAFF: Second-year head coach Marcie Boyer has compiled an 9-21 career mark. Her first win as a head coach came against Missouri State on Aug. 27, 2006. An assistant coach at SLU in 2004, Boyer spent the 2005 season as an assistant at A-10 rival West Chester, before returning to the Billikens as the head coach in 2006. She is a 2003 graduate of New Hampshire. Boyer is assisted by fellow UNH grad Lauren Bruce.

 

 

TWICE AS NICE: Molly Boyne became the first Billiken to tally twice in the same game this season when she found the net on two occasions against Kent State. Mary Henry was the last SLU player with a multi-goal game when she scored two goals against La Salle on Oct. 6, 2006.

RANK AND FILE: The Billikens have faced a rugged schedule this season having played five nationally-ranked teams. The Billikens have already battled No. 7 Michigan State, No. 11 Ohio, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 15 Indiana and No. 16 Louisville.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: The NFHCA selected the Billikens as a National Academic Squad in 2006-07. To earn the honor, a team must compile a team cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Earning individual honors for a GPA of at least 3.30 were Cathi Brownell, Jessica Dalton, Catherine Donovan, Mary Henry, Meghan Hill, Angela Lombardo, Jacklyn McGranahan and Michelle Sinclair.

CRYSTAL CLAIRE: Freshman midfielder Claire Becker (Frontenac, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) did not play last weekend.

BOYNE IDENTITY: Sophomore forward Molly Boyne (Escondido, Calif. / San Pasqual) leads the team with three goals and seven points ... took a shot in the Temple game and got a shot off against the Owls.

CB RADIO: Junior back Cathi Brownell (Oconomowoc, Wis. / University Lake) was in the starting lineup for both games against Saint Joseph's and Temple.

THE DEEM TEAM: Freshman keeper Katherine Deem (Fairview Park, Ohio / Magnificat) did not play last weekend.

CAT QUICK: Senior forward Catherine Donovan (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) took one shot against both Saint Joseph's and Temple.

BURGER KING: Freshman midfielder Stephanie Ertzberger (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) came off the bench to appear in the games against Saint Joseph's and Temple.

MUSTANG SALLY: Freshman back Sally Finney (St. Louis, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) did not play last week.

FRAMPED-UP: Junior back Christine Frampus (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) picked up an assist on Jacklyn McGranahan's game-tying goal against Temple.

DON'T MEZ WITH TEXAS: Freshman midfielder Natalie Gamez (Fort Worth, Texas / Trinity Valley) got a shot off against Saint Joseph's.

O HENRY: Junior forward Mary Henry (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) put a shot on goal in the Temple game.

ASHES TO ASHES: Senior midfielder Ashlea Hibshman (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) started both games against Saint Joseph's and Temple ... launched one shot towards the Temple goal.

KING OF THE HILL: Junior back Meghan Hill (St. Louis, Mo. / Visitation) earned starts against both Saint Joseph's and Temple.

GOOD LUCK CHARM: Sophomore back Eva Luck (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) was in the starting lineup against both Saint Joseph's and Temple.

GRAN SLAM: Junior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) scored her first goal of the season when she tied the Temple game in the first half.

LAUNCHED INTO ORBIT: Freshman forward Meghan Orbe (Chesterfield, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) did not play last weekend.

KEL-LY GREEN: Freshman forward Kelsey Shultz (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) scored on a penalty stroke in the contest against Saint Joseph's ... picked up an assist on Jacklyn McGranahan's goal against Temple.

SLY AS A FOX: Senior forward Natalie Slyman (St. Louis, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) had one shot on goal versus Saint Joseph's and Temple.

FAST MOVING TRAYN: Freshman back Kelsey Traynor (Denver, Colo. / St. Mary's) did not play last week.

WASS UP?: Senior keeper Amy Wasserman (St. Louis, Mo. / Ursuline) leads the A-10 and ranks third nationally in saves per game at 10.36 ... had 14 saves against Saint Joseph's while facing 21 shots ... saved 11 shots in the Temple contest.

SPIDER WEB: Freshman midfielder Alex Weber (Prospect, Ky. / Country Day) put one shot on goal against Saint Joseph's ... launched three shots in the Temple game.
