THIS WEEK: After a week-long break, the Saint Louis field hockey team (4-6) begins Atlantic 10 Conference play with a contest at No. 17 Massachusetts on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. (CT). The Billikens make the trip from Amherst to Boston for a noon (CT) game at Harvard on Monday, Oct. 13.

LAST TIME OUT: Jacklyn McGranahan had a hand in all five SLU goals as the Billikens blanked Bellarmine 5-0. McGranahan scored the first goal of the game, assisted on the next two, then completed a hat trick with the final two goals.

ABOUT MASSACHUSETTS: The Minutewomen (8-3) are the defending A-10 Tournament champions and are ranked 17th in this week's NFHCA poll. Erin Parker leads UMass with 14 points on four goals and a league-high six assists. Katelyn Orlando has a team-high six goals and one assist for 13 points, while Jill Powers and Katie Kelly have notched 12 and 11 points, respectively. Alesha Widdall has made 10 appearances in the cage and has a 1.27 GAA. Head coach Justine Sowry has a 22-12 mark in her second year at UMass.

ABOUT HARVARD: The Crimson is 5-5 and has won three straight matches. Leigh McCoy tops Harvard with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Maggie McVeigh and Tami Jafar have found the back of the cage three times apiece. Kylie Stone has played every second in goal and has a 2.02 GAA with 56 saves. Head coach Sue Caples is 180-161-9 in her 21st season.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Marcie Boyer is in her third season at SLU with a 15-30 career mark. An assistant coach at SLU in 2004, Boyer spent the 2005 season as an assistant at Atlantic 10 rival West Chester before returning to the Billikens as the head coach in 2006. She is a 2003 graduate of New Hampshire. Boyer is assisted by fellow UNH grad Lauren Bruce.

SAVING THE DAY: Billiken goalies rank seventh in the nation in saves per game, according to the most recent NCAA statistical report (Oct. 5). The Billikens are 17th in the country in shutouts.

 

 

RANK `EM UP: No. 17 Massachusetts will be the third ranked team the Billikens have faced this season. SLU opened the season against No. 7 James Madison and also played No. 16 Michigan.

COACHING RANKS: With her next victory, head coach Marcie Boyer will move into fifth place on the SLU coaching wins list. She is tied with the late Maria Whitehead with 15 career wins.

A-10 HONORS: Senior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 28. McGranahan's point total was the highest in a game by a Billiken since Nov. 6, 1999, and marked the first SLU hat trick since Oct. 18, 2000. She tallied the game winner, then notched assists on SLU's next two goals. McGranahan followed up with the last two tallies of the game to complete the hat trick and close out the scoring.

BOYNE IDENTITY: Junior forward Molly Boyne (Escondido, Calif. / San Pasqual) scored the third goal of the game in the Bellarmine contest ... took two shots against Missouri State.

CB RADIO: Senior back Cathi Brownell (Oconomowoc, Wis. / University Lake) started the Missouri State game.

THE DEEM TEAM: Sophomore keeper Katherine Deem (Fairview Park, Ohio / Magnificat) registered two saves to complete the shutout against Bellarmine.

BURGER KING: Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Ertzberger (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) started the Missouri State contest.

FRAMPED-UP: Senior back Christine Frampus (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) assisted on the game-winning goal versus Bellarmine ... had one shot versus Missouri State.

DON'T MEZ WITH TEXAS: Sophomore midfielder Natalie Gamez (Fort Worth, Texas / Trinity Valley) started and had a shot against Bellarmine ... was a starter in the Missouri State game.

SAAB POWERED: Senior midfielder Emily Kassab (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) took two shots in the Bellarmine game ... started the Missouri State contest.

NICK OF TIME: Freshman forward Nicole Kent (Pewaukee, Wis. / Arrowhead) saw action against Bellarmine ... took two shots at Missouri State.

BARGING AHEAD: Freshman keeper Alex LaBarge (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) started the Bellarmine game and made one save in the first half ... posted eight saves in the game at Missouri State ... ranks third in the league in saves per game at 5.30.

HI AND LO: Junior midfielder Sarah Lohmann (Houston, Texas / Duchesne) tallied the second goal of the Bellarmine game ... took three shots versus Missouri State.

GOOD LUCK CHARM: Junior back Eva Luck (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) did not play last week.

GRAN SLAM: Senior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) had a hand in all five goals against Bellarmine with three scores and two assists ... credited with two shots in the Missouri State game ... is tied for the A-10 lead in shots per game at 3.30.

NO WAY: Freshman midfielder Lauren Noe (Prospect, Ky. / Assumption) started and was credited with four shots against Bellarmine ... started the contest at Missouri State.

KELSEY'S KORNER: Sophomore forward Kelsey Shultz (St. Louis, Mo. / Villa Duchesne) picked up an assist against Bellarmine ... came off the bench in the Missouri State game ... is keeping a blog this season titled "Kelsey's Korner," available exclusively on www.slubillikens.com.

FAST MOVING TRAYN: Sophomore back Kelsey Traynor (Denver, Colo. / St. Mary's) started the Bellarmine and Missouri State contests.
