Billikens Host Richmond on Senior Day
Oct. 29, 2008
THIS WEEK: The Saint Louis field hockey team (4-12, 0-5 Atlantic 10) hosts Richmond to close out the regular season. The Billikens welcome the Spiders for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Anheuser-Busch Center. Four SLU seniors will be recognized in a ceremony before the game - Cathi Brownell, Christine Frampus, Emily Kassab and Jacklyn McGranahan. ABOUT RICHMOND: The Spiders are 8-9 overall, 4-1 in the A-10 and have won five straight games. UR has played a difficult schedule and six of its losses have come to nationally ranked teams. Megan Thompson and Katelin Peterson lead Richmond with 10 goals and 24 points apiece. Alex Malatesta is tied for the league lead in assists with seven. Goalie Becca Weaver has seen the majority of action in the cage and has a 3.40 GAA with 82 saves. Head coach Gina Lucido is 14-22 in her second year at UR. RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Billikens lost two A-10 home matches last weekend. West Chester had two quick scoring outbursts in posting a 5-0 win on Friday. Against La Salle, the Billikens scored in the final minute and earned a penalty corner at the end of the game but could not tally the game-tying goal as the Explorers escaped with a 2-1 win. Emily Kassab found the back of the cage for SLU. COACHING STAFF: Head coach Marcie Boyer is in her third season at SLU with a 15-36 career mark. An assistant coach at SLU in 2004, Boyer spent the 2005 season as an assistant at Atlantic 10 rival West Chester before returning to the Billikens as the head coach in 2006. She is a 2003 graduate of New Hampshire. Boyer is assisted by fellow UNH grad Lauren Bruce.
SAVING THE DAY: Billiken goalies rank ninth in the nation in saves per game (8.44), according to the most recent NCAA statistical report (Oct. 20). Alex LaBarge is 24th in the country in saves per game at 5.86. IN THE A-10: In the latest A-10 statistical report, Christine Frampus is tied for sixth in the league in assists per game at 0.31. Jacklyn McGranahan is second in the conference in shots per game at 3.0. RANK `EM UP: No. 17 Massachusetts was the third ranked team the Billikens have faced this season. SLU opened the season against No. 7 James Madison and also played No. 16 Michigan. COACHING RANKS: With her next victory, head coach Marcie Boyer will move into fifth place on the SLU coaching wins list. Currently, she is tied with the late Maria Whitehead with 15 career wins. A-10 HONORS: Senior midfielder Jacklyn McGranahan (Bay Village, Ohio / Magnificat) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 28. McGranahan's eight-point total was the highest in a game by a Billiken since Nov. 6, 1999, and marked the first SLU hat trick since Oct. 18, 2000. She tallied the game winner, then notched assists on SLU's next two goals. McGranahan followed up with the last two tallies of the game to complete the hat trick and close out the scoring. |
