ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University director of golf operations Ed Schwent was named Gateway PGA Section Teacher of the Year at an awards dinner Mon., Nov. 7, at Norwood Hills. Schwent earned the award based on balloting of PGA golf professionals from the Gateway PGA Section.

Schwent, who took over the SLU men's golf program in 1998, has been a PGA professional since 1993. In addition to coaching the Billiken men's team, Schwent started women's golf at the University in 2004, while serving as the director of instruction at The Missouri Bluffs in St. Charles, Mo. In both 2003 and 2005, Golf Digest ranked Schwent among the top teaching pros in Missouri.

Schwent's playing credentials include a win in both the 2000 and 2001 Gateway PGA Section Championship. He finished in the top five in the Gateway PGA player rankings in 1997 and had a top-five finish in the 1997 Gateway Masters.

This fall, Schwent led the Billiken men's team to back-to-back tournament championships. Both the team and senior David Perritt won the John Dallio Memorial at DePaul the last week of September and went on to repeat the feat at The Missouri Bluffs Challenge the first week of October. The Billikens return to play in the spring at the North/South Intercollegiate Mar. 13-14.
