Fox, Byars Receive Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarships

June 5, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis student-athletes Liz Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) of the women's soccer team and Brad Byars (Marion, Ill./Marion) of the men's swimming and diving team are among four recipients of the Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year. Fox and Byars each will receive a $5,000 award to be applied toward their postgraduate education.

Fox earned a bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics and will pursue a master's degree in nutrition at Saint Louis. She was named SLU's 2007-08 Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year and was selected to the Soccer Buzz All-Central Region third team, the A-10 All-Conference first team and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 first team.

Fox missed just two games in four seasons as a Billiken defender, playing in 80 contests with 46 starts and tallying one goal and two assists. Saint Louis registered a 56-21-5 overall record, a 31-5-2 ledger in conference play and a 0.88 goals against average during her career. The Billikens won the A-10 Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2006 and captured regular-season league championships in 2004 (Conference USA) and 2005 (A-10).

A five-time Dean's List student, Fox is a member of the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists Dietetic Practice Group, the Special Needs Soccer Association, the SLU Big Sisters program and the American Dietetics Association.

Byars, who recently was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, was named the 2008 Atlantic 10 men's swimming and diving Student-Athlete of the Year. The three-time team MVP wrapped up his collegiate career by winning the 100-yard freestyle title at the A-10 Championships, where he also finished second in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 butterfly.

This season, Byars eclipsed the school standards in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and helped the 800 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay teams break the SLU records at the conference championships. The 2007-08 SLU Male Senior Student-Athlete of the Year swam on four relay quartets that hold current Billiken standards.

Byars, who earned a bachelor's degree in human resource management, will attend SLU's School of Law this fall to begin pursuing a career in health-care law. He is a former president of the SLU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served in student government and on the Student Conduct Board. Byars was a two-time A-10 Academic All-Conference selection, made the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll five times, received the SLU Athlete Academic Excellence Award seven times and was a seven-time Dean's List honoree.

The Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship recognizes outstanding athletes, scholars and citizens who have been accepted for postgraduate study at a college or university. Recipients must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and participated with distinction in an A-10 Conference Championship sport for at least two years at his or her institution.
