Bills Home for Two A-10 Tilts

Oct. 8, 2007

On Tap: Armed with an unbeaten record in Atlantic 10 Conference play, Saint Louis women's soccer hosts two games at Robert R. Hermann Stadium this weekend. Richmond comes to town on Friday for a 7 p.m. kick off, and George Washington caps the weekend with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday. The Billikens, who have played three of their first four conference games on the road, enter the week 6-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in league play.

Following the Action: All home matches can be followed live on GameTracker on SLU's official website, www.slubillikens.com. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, on-line at www.slubillikens.com, or by calling the SLU box office at (314) 977-4SLU.

Last Week: The Billikens displayed a stingy defense during a weekend that saw them post a 1-0-1 record. SLU yielded just five shots in the two games - two by Temple and three by Saint Joseph's. On Friday, the Billikens got a second-half goal from Cassi Winchell to secure a 1-1 draw against Temple. They out-shot the Owls 24-2 in the matchup, including a game-high nine shots from Winchell. On Sunday, the Billikens escaped Saint Joseph's with a wild 3-2 victory. After being down 1-0, SLU tallied three unanswered scores and hung on late for the win. Alyssa Mautz nailed the game winner for SLU, and Ashley Hayes and Lauren Bozesky each scored as the Bills matched their season-high with three goals.

The Richmond Series: Saint Louis leads the series 1-0-0 after a 3-1 victory at Hermann Stadium in 2005.

Scouting the Spiders: Richmond comes into the week 3-7-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play. Jessie Wolfe leads the offense with seven points (3G, 1A), while Jen Ruhe follows with five points (2G, 1A). The Spiders were riding a three-match unbeaten streak in league play until they dropped a 2-1 decision against Duquesne on Sunday. Four of their seven losses have been decided by one goal. Head coach Peter Albright is in his 12th season at UR with a 116-101-1 record.

The George Washington Series:The Billikens are on top 1-0-0 after a 2-0 victory at Hermann Stadium in 2005.

Scouting the Colonials: George Washington enters the weekend 6-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the A-10. The Colonials, who are 3-0-0 in overtime games, began league play with a 5-2-0 overall record but suffered three-straight setbacks before securing their first league win last week against Duquesne. Keara Mehlert leads the team with four goals, while Erica Wright follows with three tallies. Amie Kern has seen the majority of minutes in goal and has a 1.52 GAA and four shutouts. Tanya Vogelis is 60-64-7 in eight years as the head coach at her alma mater.

A Coaching Champion: In his 12th season at the helm of the women's soccer program, head coach Tim Champion has built a tradition of success as the only coach the Billikens have known. Champion has led his teams to three conference regular-season championships and two conference tournament titles. He became the first head coach of a SLU women's team to reach the NCAA Tournament. At Saint Louis, Champion has compiled a 144-68-21 (.663) record while extending his 14-year career mark to 204-82-24 (.697). Champion's career winning percentage ranks 19th all-time among coaches with at least 10 years as an NCAA Division I head coach. The number is 21st in the nation among active coaches with at least five years at the Division I level.

Hermann Stadium: The women's soccer program has proven difficult to overcome on Robert R. Hermann Stadium's state-of-the-art natural grass. Since the facility re-opened in 1999, the Billikens have posted a 65-16-3 (.774) record at home, including a 35-5-2 (.833) mark in conference play. SLU was undefeated in the 2006 regular season at home, yielding just one tie to then-nationally ranked Marquette before falling to Illinois in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Billikens played a stretch of 18 games without a home loss, beginning Sept. 16, 2005, and running through an NCAA Tournament first-round win over Drake on Nov. 10, 2006.
