Conway Picks Up 200th Career Victory in Billiken Sweep
March 9, 2010 KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Saint Louis helped head coach John Conway capture his 200th career win with a sweep of Detroit and South Dakota on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Billikens (9-6) downed Detroit 8-2 before pounding out a school-record five home runs in an 18-1 five-inning victory over South Dakota for their fifth straight win. Against Detroit (1-5), SLU scored all eight of its runs in the first three frames - two in the first, one in the second and five in the third. The Titans plated one run in the fifth and one in the sixth. Hannah Huebbe improved to 5-2 after giving up just one earned run in five innings of work. Emma DeKalb also tossed two innings of relief. Offensively, Kristin Nicoletti went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBIs, while Jessica Buschjost also contributed two RBIs. Caitlin Trevillyan posted two hits and Kelly Flanagan was 1-for-1. The Bills compiled a season-high 16 hits in the South Dakota contest, coming just one base hit shy of tying the school record for hits in a game. Liz Jones, Nicki Jost, Trevillyan, Rachel Faletto and Kristain Burger each recorded a home run as Saint Louis eclipsed the school mark for homers in a game. The previous standard of three home runs had been achieved six times, including twice this season. With 14 round-trippers in 2010, SLU is just three away from its home run total for all of last season.
South Dakota (2-10) scored its lone run in the fifth inning, while SLU's runs came in bunches. The Billikens scored three runs in the first, five in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth. Nicoletti again led the way, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Jones went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Jost was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Trevillyan added two hits and drove in three runs. Kelcie Matesa (4-3) earned the win after striking out seven and allowing just one run in five innings. Conway's career mark stands at 200-156-1 in eight seasons, while his SLU record is 83-105-1 in four seasons. |
