Conway Adds Three Players to 2009 Softball Roster
June 30, 2008
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis head softball coach John Conway added a West Coast-transplant and the first local player to his 2009 recruiting class with the signings of infielder Kelly Flanagan (San Diego, Calif. / University City) and utility player Erin Cejka (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood), respectively. Conway also announced that St. Louis Post-Dispatch Player of the Year, middle infielder Kerri Dockins (Millstadt, Ill. / Belleville West), has also chosen to attend the University and compete as a member of the softball team. Flanagan, Cejka and Dockins will all have four years of eligibility starting with the 2008-09 academic year. "Kelly is a power-hitting corner infielder who will definitely add some much needed pop to our lineup," Conway said. "Erin is one of the top left-handed hitters in the area who can hit for power and average. Kerri has great softball sense. She is a solid infielder with good speed and a strong bat. We've got a diverse group of newcomers this year who should be able to contribute immediately." Flanagan comes to SLU after earning second-team all-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) honors the past two seasons. She showed promise from the start of her four-year career, receiving offensive MVP honors as a freshman and working her way toward overall team MVP accolades as a senior. The 2008 Western League Player of the Year, Flanagan was also named to the All-League first team as a junior and senior. Flanagan also excelled in the classroom, being named to the principal's honor roll all four years and receiving San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic team plaudits in 2007 and 2008. Cejka (cheh-KUH) earned Class 4A All-State first-team honors as a senior after batting a team-high .452 for Ken Shaw's Pioneers. The two-time first team All-Metro pick also led the squad with a .456 on-base percentage, a .786 slugging percentage and 20 RBIs in 2007. Cejka, who was named to the All-District team in 2006, led the St. Louis area with seven triples as a junior. She also ranked among the top players in the St. Louis area in doubles (13), slugging percentage (.952) and batting average (.560). Cejka also earned her school's Lamp of Learning and Gold K academic awards, in addition to being a member of the National Honor Society.
Dockins, a four-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Scholar-Athlete and three-year starter at shortstop, helped guide the Maroons to four regional crowns during her career. She earned first-team All-Conference accolades in 2008 after being named to the second team as a junior. In 2007, Dockins was selected to the Belleville News-Democrat Class 2A All-Area squad. A four-time recipient of her school's Scholar-Athlete Award, Dockins was also a two-year starter on the Belleville West basketball team. Her numerous honors also extend to the classroom where she was a member of the high honor roll all four years, was selected as an Illinois State Scholar and was a member of the National Honor Roll. Dockins received her school's Outstanding Achiever Award three times, was recognized as the 2007 Youth Salute Leadership Award recipient and earned the Excellence in Citizenship, Character and Commitment Award in 2006 and 2007. The trio joins utility player Lindsey Ciresa (Branchburg, N.J. / Somerville), infielder Rachel Faletto (Morton, Ill. / Morton) and right-handed pitcher Kelcie Matesa (Benld, Ill. / Gillespie) in Conway's 2009 recruiting class. |
